Setting up Naim NDX - routers and wires questions!!

Posted by: hertz on 30 January 2014

I know this could come across as a dump question. I have been messing around with power cords and power conditioning and have come to see the benefits so being the vigilant audiophile that I am, I was wondering about using the right kind of network solution and wires with my NDX.

I know we are dealing with data here and anything that works should do, but i was wondering if anyone has played around with these and found any differences between different makes.

Anyone use the apple airport express ?

Right now I have connected my ndx via the household internet wifi router where I have a bunch of other things also connected + internet.

I was thinking of using a switch (instead of a wifi router) which is installed in my hifi rack so that it is isolated from all the other bits and pieces and internet. I do not need internet anyway for my hifi. When I want NDX and NAS on my network to copy files etc...i can just temporarily connect a wire.

What do you all think ?

Just out of interest Lars, if I have read your configuration correctly, why are you using Airplay and not using the Airport Express in Client mode?

nice link :-) having read the first 5 links, i get to something different so maybe i dont get it (would not be surpriced)

static ip allows better access to the server, whereas dynamic is good when new devices connect to the network (e.g new tablets or phones). so in a home environment, reserved ip leases give best of two worlds. this would mean that i on the homerouter in its settings accessed thru the browser? make reserved adresses for the core parts of the music network?

- NDS

- NAS

- US SSD

- airport extreme

- airport express

Other devices will get an ip assigned by the router still in dhcp mode.

is this the way to go (cannot google that...)

thx Lars

hi Mac User, i am not sure about your question sorry. in my setup, the express' main function is to provide network access for the NDS to rest of network. i have also enabled airplay on it and connected digi out to NDS to play eg spotify etc.

what does client mode mean? maybe i should use that also.

thx

Hi Lars, well letting your broadband router do the DHCP is most likely best.

You may want to fix certain IP addresses, and it is usually best to fix these using DHCP.

So why fix? Well this is usually because of limitations elsewhere and shouldn't be necessary but in the real world do so  if the following happens.

1) your Network player regularly 'disappears' from the network, then fix its IP address.

2) if you use use playlists on Nstream it is best to fix the IP NAS address, especially if your UPNP/DLNA server is separate from your NAS. It does this by always giving the same address back to the particular device when it requests an address.

You typically fix the IP addresses in DHCP by telling the DHCP server in its setup screen the network layer 2 address [sometimes called MAC address] (string of 12 hexadecimal characters in pairs) of the device you want to fix the IP address of.

i recommend using DHCP rather than manually configuring each host if you have a DHCP server (most semi-descent home routers will allow you to do this), as it makes changes and maintenance easier, and helps prevent potential conflicts in certain power on scenarios.

  • so if you have a DHCP server use if for dynamically assigned variable and fixed IP addresses.
  • if you don't have a DHCP server available or enabled, then keep a manual list of addresses and manually set each host/device.

Thanks Simon!

I will move forward as you suggest, also as I experience that the devices disappear from the network.

Many thanks

Lars

This stuff really works! My system is now very stable, starts instantly when i choose tracks and no issue with server disappearing.

What i did
1) reserved ip for key components
2) new switch from cisco 2960
3) updated US to 1.7a
4) changed ethernet cables

Thanks for great advice!

Lars, great! Using quality components designed for the job, and keeping it simple leads to a reliable outcome.

Absolutely - you don't have to go nuts to make it all work the way that it should ... just do it right and keep it simple.

Hey guys,

I wanted to report on some progress and some problems too.

As a first step I changed my old wifi router to D-Link DSL-2750U ADSL + wifi router.

I still have not bought a switch and isolated the components. This is the next step.

So now, the connection is setup like this :-

Internet ( phone line ), Nas and Ndx are all connected to the dlink wifi router directly.

Some problems I see now are as follows :

  1. Sometimes the nstream will give me a ‘cannot connect to server” error although I can access the NAS from the Ndx. This usually happens when I restart the system and ipad again. I guess nstream would have slept..If I kill nstream on the ipad and restart it, everything will start working again.
  2. Now, the strange part, once everything starts playing again, if I try playing an album which was played the last time I played the system, it refuses to play. Ndx gives a “ stopped “ message. If I clear the cache of upnp and play again, it starts playing..

Network is set to DHCP…if that helps.

Any idea what is causing all these problems ?
