Why does my UnitiServe make whirry noises when it's not doing anything?

My UnitiServe lives on my Hifi rack, which I know might not be the best place, but so be it. Sometimes, when I sit in the chair right next to the stereo, I can hear it making a noise. It's obviously the hard disc spinning, but what's it up to? It's not playing music. It's not backing up. Is it just exercising? Why can't it just sit there quietly doing nothing?

Hi HH,
I know nothing about the uniti serve so can't comment accurately.this used to happen with my qnap.i could hear it every now and then spinning.i found out later there was a setting to make it go to sleep.it now only starts up on lan when I open n-stream or copy to it.maybe the uniti serve has this option.
