ND5XS + nStream not seeing AIFF's
Posted by: nap-ster on 05 February 2014
I have an ND5XS (v3.21) here on loan whilst I wait for a new one to arrive. I have a ReadyNAS Duo v1 2x1.5Tb with my music files on connected through an Apple Airport Extreme. The majority are ripped with iTunes. Using the nStream app (v3.6.7479) on an iPad when I go into "Browse Folders" I can see all the folders that are present on the NAS. However, when I select a folder that has AIFF files present it appears as "Empty". When I go into UPnP>Music>Artist the AIFF folders don't appear. On the NAS the file extension for the AIFF's is .aif. I'm hoping that I've missed something obvious!
Does the UPnP server you have running on the NAS support AIFF ?

I'm not entirely sure James. I do have Netgear's ReadyDLNA (v1.1.1) enabled and RAIDiator 4.1.3 installed. A Sonos picked up the same files with no problem.
Have you got uPnP compatibility mode turned on in nStream? It's in the Settings menu. Try that.

Thanks. I've tried that with no success. I decided to XLD some AIFF's to FLAC and they were picked up without issue. I guess it's something to do with the n-Stream/ReadyNAS not recognising the AIFF's. I guess it's a choice of re-ripping/converting or getting a different NAS!
When you browse by folder. do you see any content??
If so, Meta Tags are not writen into AIFF using Itunes.
If you rip with DB Poweramp it will work
As far as i know DB Poweramp is the only ripper who actually writs propper tags into Aiff and WAV data files

No content when I browse by folder, correct. And here's me thinking AIFF's were compatible with the ND5.
Check out Naim's spec for the ND5 which confirms that it can stream AIFF files up to 24 bit 192KHz so the problem must lie elsewhere.
Checking the net suggests that ReadyDLNA does not support AIFF.
I guess the problem is uPnP.
Convert the aiff to flac or wav or install proper codec for aiff on upnp software

According to this: https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...ives?page=1 the ReadyNAS Duo is on the recommended list. However, it does say that you need 4.1.6 FW on it. I have the Duo v1 which, at present will only go up to 4.1.3, so I'm guessing when they say the Duo they mean the v2/104 version? Does anybody have the later version running AIFF's?
Hi nap-ster
I have both a Readynas duo v2 and a newer RN102 and have unsuccessfully tried to stream AIFF files via ReadyDLNA.
I have been in dialogue with Netgear support for a number of weeks now but have yet to get confirmation from them that AIFF is not supported (my belief also from searching various support forums is that it isn't supported).
The resolution I have found to work well is to install Minimserver directly onto the ReadyNas. Have a look at their website, their install instructions are good and worked first time for me.
I can now stream AIFF, FLAC (and Transcoded to WAV if necessary) and WAV directly from the Duo v2 to my new NDX !
If I could only get NStream to sort them by artist/album.. then I'd be happy !
Hi NPR
n-stream takes its sort/navigation options from the media server software and its navigation tree. I use JRiver which allows you to customise the DLNA server options for navigation and these show up faithfully on nstream. Of course JR has to run on a computer (it won't run from a nas unfortunately) but perhaps you should look at how minimserver's navigation tree is configured to see if you can customise that the way you want it to show up on nstream.
Many thanks NPR. Unfortunately looking at their website I think that they only support x86 or ARM versions and not the SPARC Duo v1(?). The quandry I have is that my NAS is 90% full (of a 2x1.5Tb) of music and the majority of that is in AIFF/iTunes ripped format. I don't really fancy re-ripping/converting. It might be an easier option just to dump the files onto a new NAS that would support AIFF streaming to the ND5 if there is such a NAS?
Hi sjbabbey,
Yes I've tried that on the minimserver and appears to work ok, however, if I set compatibility mode off, it sorts it only via album name.
Enabling compatibility mode then looses stuff like play lists and play now & next and the index down the side-bar, etc ( and appears to be a bit more unstable, slower and looses connection more often). So it appears n-stream is imposing some type of sorting and overriding whatever miminserver is sending.
Hi nap-ster, not sure about other NAS supporting aiff natively, I see another thread out there re Synology not supporting aiff until something like minimserver was installed.
I'm sure someone else out there can clarify.
sorry misread the other thread, I think Synology does support aiff !

Yes it looks like it. Can anyone confirm that a 213 or 214 would be suitable?
As an alternative, and a cheaper one, to buying a new NAS, DBpoweramp has a batch convert facility which will convert any number of files from (more or less) any format into (more or less) any format.
