For that kind of money, it really ought to include hubcaps.

Old classic Mercedes can fetch huge sums. I'd like to think that is because the people buying them appreciate the cars themselves and the wonderful engineering. If I had that kind of money I think I'd be tempted by a well restored Mercedes from that era e.g. a 'Gullwing'. But I suspect many just regard it as an investment which ought to appreciate, rather like works of art.

MDS,
I think you'll find that the 300SL Gullwing, 1952-1963 (all models) is somewhat younger that the 600 Pullman in the pic.

pedant about what? 71 comes between 63 and 81

I think the 600 is the contemporary of the second and third generation SLs i.e. not the Gullwing (W198) but the 'Pagoda' (W113) built 63 - 71 and then from 71 the third generation SL (R107).
And in fantasy land, I'd actually find it quite hard to chose between the Gullwing and the Pagoda, both being beautiful cars.
PS Not so much being a pendant but a long-time Mercedes fan and reader of the owners' club monthly gazette.
