Unitiserve questions

Posted by: TN on 14 February 2014

I have 2 questions:

1)  Reading the manual, it seems to say that the only way to backup the serve disk is to back it up to a NAS.  Is it possible to attach a USB hard disk to the serve and backup to that external hard disk.  I attached a hard disk but wasnt able to find a way to do it.

2)  When ripping, does the Serve only check the AMG database?  I only see the AMG logo.  Also, if it checks the AMG database, why does the occasional album come up as unknown -- even though AMG has it on their website?

Thanks.

1, the manually apparently has been written correctly

2, at the end of the day its a computer and occasionally it gets it wrong. As long as you know what that unknown album is you can manually correct

It also checks the FreeDb database. The hit rate between the two is very high.

But with the FreeDB database, you'll need to upload the cover art using nserve (or desktop client).

Time spent correcting metadata, I think, brings a very satisfying result with all cover art present, all double albums named correctly, all artists named consistently... it just makes for a great listening session experience (IMHO).

On the subject of backup - you will need a NAS.  Something like a D-Link with just one disk would do the job for not very much money; you don't need to go fully raided (2 or more disks) expensive NAS enclosure + bells & whistles just to give yourself a sporting chance of recovering your music when your US drive fails (and it will... in the fullness of time).

Thanks.

I think I'm going to be manually entering details for a lot of CDs.  Somehow the check with AMG or FreeDB doesnt always work.  One example is the Camera Obscura CD "Desire Lines."  It comes up on the Serve as Unknown with "Album 870afb0c".  But a check with FreeDB shows up the same CD with a Disc ID of 870afb0c -- the same ID.  But the Serve shows it as "Unknown."

You might contact Naim.  Something may be wrong -- it may not reliably be contacting the online database.  You should have VERY few 'can't id a cd' situations.

I hadn't noticed that the FreeDb lookups didn't pick up the album covers, but with more than 98% of my almost 2000 CDs recognised at first rip by one or other database, I have no complaint. Adding the missing art is no big deal.

Thinking further about this TN, have you checked that the US actually has internet access?

Yes, it does have internet access.

One other example happened yesterday.  The first time I tried to rip it, I could see on the ripping monitor that it was searching AMG and the FreeDB and it came up as unknown.  I checked the Album ID from the ripping monitor with FreeDB and found it there.  So I reinserted the CD and this time, the album details came up.

Very strange.
