Difference between n-stream and full ip control

Posted by: stpierre76 on 21 February 2014

Hi all,

can someone explain what is the difference between n-stream and a full ip control of the uniti series.

m not sure if what I am asking is making sense but I ll try to explain a bit better if I can.

i recently bought roomie remote system which is an app that with the aid of a wifi or Ethernet device will act as a universal control via the ipad. the itatch ( Ethernet or wifi device ) will automatically find every device in your house that is connected to your network and if not IP control you can add IR to control those units.

In my set up it automatically found my apple media, yamaha receiver, sharp tv but not the naim gear.

I had thought because of n- serve that the naim uniti series was ip controlled but turns out not, so I had to get the extra IR and tell roomie that I have a naim qute as to send the correct codes via IR.

everything works a treat, all my av gear is in a common cabinet and can do what need to do without opening the cupboard doors.

However, I have one little caveat, which is the volume of the qute. Though I can easily change volume up/down via roomie remote I have no idea of the level it s on ( numbers) and that is a bit hit and miss as I like my volume on 40 but can t see unless I open up the doors.

on the other hand, the yamaha, being picked up by roomie remote via the network, I can see the volume level on the ipad when I change it.

Is there anyway I can have that on the qute. is there a function or setting I can turn on to have that volume displayed in n-stream at least?

hope what I wrote makes sense And you can understand what I mean.

regards

All these codes do exist for serial links (RS232, USB), but not for IP commands AFAIK.

an Ethernet to USB device (or RS232 depending on your Qute's gen) ?

Hi Manu,

thank you for the reply.

so you think that if I use the rs232 i ll be able to see the volume on the ipad via roomie.

i have been toying with that idea to be honest. Will try it as need to order a few more devices from itachtch as trying all avenues for a remote system.

the other option may be something like control 4, rti.......but I beleive they are way more expensive than roomie.

the roomie is great as it does everything well and quite cheap to be honest. So far it behaves the way I want it to be, if only I could sort out the volume indicator on the system, it be great.

Do you know what the difference between rs 232 and IR is in terms of functionality? Are they more functions via rs232?

thank you in advance

I dont think you will ever get to a truely universal remote and the roomie interface looks like a nightmare.

for my money the logitech harmony smart, great little remote withe more complex stuff on the ipad if needed. Nstream or what ever to pick your music.

if you use JRiver as your server you could use iOS device for everything.  Otherwise as garyi mentioned, the Harmony remotes are great.  It can control everything that has IR, so it will do everything that the Uniti remote does.  I am assuming you can FULLY control the Uniti with the supplied remote control.  You dont need NStream right?

Get the new Harmony Smart Hub/Remote.  Very nice.

To see the volume level with the cupboard doors closed then give "Naremote" a try. It's written by Beeka, a member of this forum.
