Converting UnitiServe WAV files to FLAC files using XLD

Posted by: The Meerkat on 26 February 2014

I no longer have my UnitiServe SSD, and am now in the process of converting all my ripped WAV files to FLAC, using XLD, to be streamed with my ND5 XS. I'm also re tagging a few FLAC files stored on my NAS. (I am a iMac user)

Please can anyone advise? In XLD Preferences, under 'Output Format', I have obviously ticked FLAC. But there is also a 'drop down option' for compression, listed as 'None', 'Normal', or 'High'. At the moment it is set to 'None'. Does anyone know what the correct compression setting should be? The reason that I ask, is that the re tagged FLAC files have come out slightly larger than the original FLACs. This not issue re storage, I was thinking of quality.

Thanks

David, the quality should be the same no matter what the flac compression level.  In theory, less compression (and thus bigger files) may allow the cpu of the player to do less math and thus be "quieter."

I don't think I've read of anyone doing a blinded a vs. b among various flac compression levels.

I think that you can feel comfortable in the 'Normal' zone.

How are you going to add metadata to the flac files?

Hi Bart...thank you for your reply.

The artwork is all there, then XLD appears to do the rest. I am having to put 01, 02, etc before the track name, otherwise Wonky Twonky lists the tracks alphabetically! The ND5 XS then displays all the info, in the form of a little CD booklet, very nicely!
