iPad

For all the accessibility and pleasure that streaming using N-Serve on the iPad brings - I end up not as engaged in the music as I used to be when all I was looking at was the album cover

now it's news/email/planning my next holiday/facetime ... but I can't put it down!  grrrr

first world problem, nostalgia or both?

Self awareness and self management.  You can turn off the iPad.

And it depends if you're wanting to really focus on the music, or are happy to just have it on in the background so to speak.

The iPad is addictive and distracting. I tend to avoid using it for nServe, and rely on an old iPod Touch. Touch in the left hand, volume control in the right.

As Bart says, it comes down to self control / discipline. If you stick with the iPad, try to use it only for music as you listen. Why not explore nServe further ? Set up some playlists of tracks that never fail to engage you. Hit "Shuffle tracks" within a favourite genre, or across all genres. Guaranteed to bring up some surprises.

If you can use Facetime while listening to a Naim system, there's something very wrong with the system... or maybe you just need some new music ?

I just select the music, play, adjust volume and flip it shut. To me it's nothing more than a very versatile remote control. It's habitual. I only sit down on the sofa to listen to misic. Always have. If I want news, weather, email etc I'll be on my PC in the office, probably doing several things at once with music sometimes playing in the background.

I sometimes like using Wikipedia to learn more about artists, or YouTube to see them play or explore other works.  This would be after a song is over.  I love having that resource at my fingertips, and see it as more of an enhancement than distraction.

Cheers,

This is fairly common at my home too.  My wife and I will be listening to music from the 70's and inevitably some question comes up about people or places or dates, and it's off to Wikipedia.

I'd be happy if I could stop myself opening the second bottle!

I just bought a used 1st generation iPad for $150 in great shape and set it up exclusively for the Naim (i.e. no email acct, iCloud, etc). Got a cool easel for it so it always lives in the same place (the thing I hated most about using an old iPhone was always losing the thing).

I am thinking of card cataloging many of my old cds. Has anyone done this? Any tips? I have lots of comps of various music genres, and it would be nice to access the info contained on the booklets. Plus the investment made only returns pennies on the used market anymore. It's just finding the time...
