Did you read the thread title ?

No I like to randomly comment off topic, a bit like others in this thread. If it offends you I suggest you ignore it

You'll fit in well here

Now that's a very scary thought!

Sadly no - and the minibus is hired.

To answer the post: 'none'. I drive Swedish cars only. What else would you expect a Norse god to do?

Volvo XC70 with winter tyres: eats snow for breakfast, lunch and tea.

Really enjoyed the 120D convertible and Z4.  Amazing N52 engine in the Z4....

i was rather sad to part with Bruce, my trusty 525 TDS Touring. It did 130K miles or so without a glitch, but then the Audi A6 2.6 TDi Avant I replaced it with was a better car and certainly more economical.

I had a 330d estate and concluded long time ago that I should have held onto it as it pretty much ticked every need box I had.  Instead I gave in to a child hood pang for a sporty beetle and spent the next few years paying bills and worrying about catastrophic engine failure!  Lesson learned.  I'm back in the BMW camp, albeit in a bigger one than I need, but it works well and I'm likely to keep it for a long time to come.

Chris, you'll regret being Bestla to me...

My 1988 M5 is 25+ years old and still going strong with 175,000 miles on it.  It is getting a little long in the tooth however, and I will regret selling it in a year or two.

The E39 M5 is a stonking good car and getting to be tremendous VFM - if you can get a good 'un. So that might be a way to go.

My very first car after passing my test aged 17 was a BMW 1602 which I had  swapped for a Mark Three Ford Escort that I had bought before I could drive. The Beemer was lovely and now worth serious money...

More recently I had a gorgeous 7 series which I adored but when I had to start taking my dog to the vets and the river/woods in winter the leather seats were getting battered so I sold it.

Dear Gordon,

The 2002 [same body shape as your picture] was a grand car, and I rode in one many times, but about forty years ago. Since then I have ridden in a 750, which is a V12. My Aunty called it, "Quite a good car!"

The famous French interviewer Bernaud Pivot used to ask his guests 'what is your favourite sound?'. For me it is the delicious ping a 7 series makes when you open or close the door. Lovely car.

Dear Gordon,

The big beemer was my aunt's husband's car, and now he is sadly gone my aunt just has an ancient Saab 900 convertible.

I have never been in a car with so much power and still not hint of roughness about it as the big BMW. Incredibly comfortable too.

"regret selling" narrows it down quite a lot.  Have had four BMWs:

  1. G reg 320i convertible - didn't regret selling it, not nice to drive, enjoyed replacement Subaru Legacy turbo
  2. N reg 318is company car - regretted replacing with a Mk4 VW Golf TDi instead of getting saloon 318is (which would have been much nicer to drive though less sensible partnered with an Elise)
  3. 53 reg 525d touring company car - really lovely car except the stereo was disastrously awful and the intercooler died 2 months outside warranty.  Cost my employer rather a lot to fix - regretted replacing with an Audi
  4. X reg 530d - very, very lovely but caught out by snow (though winter tyres would have fixed that) and lack of estate more of a problem than I had thought

Currently trying to decide what to replace the Subaru Outback with - one of the options is M135i but slightly concerned it might result in me driving far too fast...

E36 318iS Coupe in Madeira Violet, tastefully modified with full M3 body kit, wing mirrors and AC Schnitzer Stainless Steel exhaust.

Loved it for the three years I owned it but it had to go when my daily commute increased to 90 miles and those servicing lights started to go out with alarming regularity and great expense.

Not been in a position to buy another one since but it was by some margin the best car I've had the pleasure of owning and part of me thinks I should have kept it.

Cars are now very much a tool to me so I doubt I'll be getting another Beemer any time soon; how life changes!

Happy memories.

Ian
