Posted by: N16SPS on 28 February 2014
I've started to listen to Johnny Winter and interested in buying some of his albums anyone able to give me an essential list of his albums as I've looked at his discogs and there's loads
Cheers Pete
I just bought the original albums 5CD box set for about £9 which should be a good starting point. I think his first two albums are supposed to be essential. I like his work with Muddy waters too.
Call for Dr Blues!
Hi Quad - is he a forum member!?
Just ordered Johnny Winter / Still Alive and Well / The progressive Blues Experiment on Vinyl for starters!

Hi Pete. Yes it's our very own real Dr, Steve J . However, the two you have ordered are a v good start IMO.
No dout Steve will have some other excellent & expensive recommendations in due course .
Graham.
Thanks Graham I know who Steve is he has been helpful on many occasions with my queries.

Hi Pete,
Luckily none are too expensive on 1st press vinyl and are also relatively easy to pick up. For me I like the original CBS albums but his catalogue is quite long over the years. I bought his first two albums as a teenager and that probably accounts for my favouritism as there is a certain sentimental value.
His first CBS LP is pure electric blues including Mean Mistreater.
His second CBS LP is my favourite. It's a three sided double album which includes the Hendrix inspired Love Everybody.
His third CBS LP is more rock orientated and, for me, not the best of his earlier albums.
Although rock orientated with tracks like Great Balls of Fire and Johnny B. Goode this is a good live album.
These are a few to be going on with.

Great thanks for that Steve.

I'm sure I saw a post via email from Tony with a cover of this album;
I think Tony realised after posting that this is an LP of Johnny's brother Edgar.
Edgar's albums are less guitar orientated and a bit more jazzy with organ and sax. I saw him live about 10 years ago and he was still very good. My favourite Edgar Winter album is this on Epic

Yep, you got it. They are spitting image and I'm not talking puppet here!
Entrance is great. It's got hi smega hit " Tobacco Road" but I was more drawn into jazzy tunes like Fire & Ice.
But my alltime fave is his jazzy and trippy Jasmine Nightdreams.
Thanks for the recommendation Kuma. This one slipped under my radar. I'll check it out.
Steve,
If you like Johnny Winter, you might not like Edgar's *Island sound* era music.
The album contains light pop/R&B ear candy type tunes as well as this long Synth funky jazz.
This is far far away from hard core Texas Blues. You are warned!
I love this album. Incidentally, this was the very first LP I put on after I got my LP12 after many years of absence from vinyl playing.
I never got into Johnny Winter's music. In fact I stopped right around Edgar released 'Together' which was a duo with his brother. Too much Rock'n'roll.
I am envious you have seen him. Edgar Winter Group never made it to Japan unfortunately.
Not to tread too far off the Johnny topic, but since Edgar is getting talk at this time, I must say ....
I saw Edgar perform Frankenstein with Ringo & his All-Starr Band in 2010. Easily the best live-performance of a rock song I've ever experienced. Edgar played various keyboards, sax, and percussion. It brought down the house (even though we were outdoors). Still gives me chills when I hear that song on the radio. Very gifted, multi-talented musician.
Edgar supported John Mayall in St Albans when I saw him. It's a small venue, standing only, and the atmosphere was great. My son, who was about 14 at the time, really enjoyed it too. I saw Johnny Winter at the Bishopstock Festival in Exeter around 2002, but it was only an appearance on stage as he wasn't well enough to play. Pity.
So far after buying a few albums Still Alive and Well is my favorite. I can see where Stevie Ray Vaughan
gets his style from.

I love The Johny Winter And album, seem to remember buying it a few days before seeing him play it live at what I vaguely remember as the Mayfair Ballroom in Birmingham.
