n-Stream, Asset & Twonky

Posted by: Stephen Pritchard on 05 March 2014

I have a couple of issues:

1. I recently moved some of my music files around on my NAS (QNAP 412 running Twonky) and could not find them on n-Stream.  I cleared the cache and after a while I could navigate to the new files, but when I went to play them - some other music came out of the speakers.

2. I assume Twonky needed to re catalogue my music - but how can I get it do that manually?

3. I have tried to use Asset on my QNAP but I cant get it to populate the folders - I can't find instructions (for the simple) how to set up Asset.  Can anyone point me in the right direction.

4. I have also tried to instal minim but with no success.

I have a QNAP 412, iMac running Windows 7, and a MacBook Pro communicating over a wired internet system with Mac Aiports proving wifi for iPhone and iPad controls.  I stream to some Qutes (bedroom, kitchen and study) and to NDS.   I am frustrated with n-Stream - it keeps dropping out and often I need to restart it to run multi-room music.

Is anyone else frustrated out there?

3. You have to point asset to a directory like this "/share/Multimedia". I had the same problem and after adding "/share/" issue resolved...

I also experienced much n-stream dropping out and this issue mostly cured after setting a static ip address fom my streamer.

Ah the share tip is what I need I think.

Thanks for that charnik.

Yes I use static addresses for all my kit - but I'll go back to n-Stream and check.

I also have a 412. Don't discount its puny RAM allocation as being the cause of the troubles rather than Twonky. login and have a look at the performance stats. I have disabled everything bar Twonky and Logitech media server and as I have the qnap on all the time I have it set to reboot once a week. This seems to flush the RAM effectively.

Have be you got the 4.x qnap software?

also if you are using the older version of Twonky that came with the NAS, you will be pleasantly surprised with the latest version.  (Install as an app)

I also use a qnap 412. It works very well with minimserver. And I think its easy to install. What's the problem?

Well - too many headless indians - Oh sorry Endian!

What I mean is I follow the instructions for installing Java on the ARM models I guess my Mac had trouble with the .tar.gz file.  Perhaps I should try from my iMac running windows before I winge too much.

Also check if the problem of dropouts is caused by unstable wireless network connection between your router and ipad. My ipad2  looses quite frequently its network connection although it appeares as connected to my wireless router. In other words when your n-stream drops out check immediately if you can browse with safari. If you can't browse then it's not n-stream problem.

Delated update:

1. Finally replaced BT Homehub to Netgear N600 - stability improved no-end

2. Upgraded firmware on QNAP 412 and latest version of Twonky (7.2.7)

3. Fiddled around with Twonky settings. I had set the navigation tree to "advanced media navigation" as I have around 1,000 albums but that lost me my folder navigation. I have now returned to the "folder view".  But I still can't see the contents of my folders ... and its a pity I now cant search by composer or artist.

4. Am I missing a trick here or is it that I need to reboot the NAS (it seemed to take at least 24 hrs to populate the last time I did that ...)
