NDS SXPS Burndy

Posted by: Nick B on 07 March 2014

Quick question - I currently have an SXPS Burndy that was used between my 555PS and NDAC. Can this same SXPS Burndy (smooth plastic finish) be used to connect input 1 on an NDS to output 1 on my 555PS as per the NDS manual or are there different types of SXPS Burndy ?

I know I need to purchase a 555A Burndy to connect input 2 on the NDS to output 2 on my 555PS, I just don't want to have to buy a SXPS Burndy if I already have one that will work.

Thanks in advance !

I think they are the same . . . but I am not so sure that the second Burndy is sold separately.

I bought the 'kit' containing both when I got my NDS, and I think I have the old SXPS Burndy in my 'pile of orphaned cables'

Nick - did you get a definitive answer on this? Am facing exactly the same dilemma!

You have to buy the Burndy's as a kit. The s-xps Burndy carry's sound and power. The Burndy kit that comes with the NDS does what the s-xps does but over separate Burndy's when using the 555PS.

I know this as I have just ordered an NDS. ( I use a s-xps for my NDX into my 555PS-DR)

But if you want to use the s-xps only then yes you can just use that cable to connect to input 1 on the 555PS

The definitive reply I got was that you have to buy the twin burndy pack which I've now done. I haven't compared the pins on the output 1 burndy to my SXPS burndy but the outward appearance of the burndys is also different.

This has confused a number of us who upgraded from the DAC to the NDS, so I'll attempt to communicate how this was explained to me...

It is first worth noting the accessories that come with these three components:

1) 555PS - Powerline

2) NDS - DIN5 interconnect, Link plug, BNC to RCA adaptor, Wi-Fi Antenna, Uniti Remote, Burndy leads (only if specified)

3) DAC - Link plug, mains lead, 180 DIN5-DIN5 Interconnect

If you are starting from scratch and buying an NDS, there is no confusion.  You purchase an NDS, a 555PS, and a Burndy kit consisting of two cables: one of type S-XPS, and one of type 555A.  Both are required to make the connection (see page 4 of the manual).

But what if you started off with a DAC, and then later, you added a 555PS? Then you would have needed to buy a single S-XPS Burndy to connect the two.

Then later you decide to sell or trade-in your DAC for an NDS. Since the DAC did not include the S-XPS Burndy, you keep it.  But as the NDS includes no Burndy cables, you are still short one Burndy of type 555A.

As far as I can tell, there are two possible solutions for this. Either you buy only the 555A Burndy you need, or you buy the two cable kit, and receive a trade-in credit from your dealer for your original S-XPS.

Hope this helps more than confuses.

Thanks Hook!

A couple of comments, based on my viewing of the current (for not much longer) Naim US Retail Price List.

1 -- there is no separate listing for the 555A Burndy.

2 -- there is a comment in the Price List (in the NDS Burndy Pack listing) that says, "do not use S-XPS Burndy with NDS/555PS."

What I don't know is how much of this is the way the cables are marketed, vs. how much of it is based on the hardware itself and what technically is and is not suitable!

*edit*  The listing for the NDS Burndy Pack says that the pack is priced for "$200 savings off normal price of two Burndys," but again I see no pricing for them separately in any event!

Hi Bart -

I traded my old SXPS in for the two cable kit, so never tested if the old cable worked.

Interesting that the NDS manual identifies the new cable as an "SXPS". If the old and new really are two different cables, then Naim should have given them two different names!

I guess the mystery continues... :-(

The cables are different:

The two cables in the burndy pack come with this cool looking mesh outer covering.

The burndy that comes with the XPS-DR has an outer layer that pretty much looks like on a snaic, powerline etc.

Another interesting question:

What cable to use when powering a NDS with a second (XPS-DR) powersupply? The s-xps from the burndy pack or from the xps-dr?

I too went from the Dac to the NDS, and just bought the Burndy Pack and have held onto my old Burndy.
