Hi, does anyone know if/ where you can get high quality versions of Dire Straits's music?

i know I could get a cd and rip it but I can't find high quality files anywhere.  Anywhere that will let me download them to my country that is.

The simple answer is 'Original CDs'. As early as possible. West German 'Target', 'Blue Swirl' or 'Red Swirl' are the best.

Subsequent releases sound inferior on a good system. The problem with offered 'Hi Def' downloads is that the provenance is generally unknown. If they are taken from a later remastered version; don't bother.

Agree - the worst offender by far of the 'remasters' is 'Making Movies'.

You could actually try and get a copy of the current SHM disc as it is by far and away the best version of the 1st album there is. It has got an amazing dynamic range.

For all other titles I have only heard the originals so go along with J N.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I know that hi-def downloads are not always what they're cracked up to be.

I actually have the original vinyl in perfect condition, but no turntable.

Brothers in Arms is on DVD-A as a 96/24 5.1 version which by all accounts is excellent, but it is very rare selling upwards of £150.00.

Original vinyl pressings recorded to computer through offboard ADC. Works for me!

The only Dire Straits I have is a transfer from tape of the Mandela Concert at Wembley.

Other recordings of DS seem tame after that.

George, Dire Straits? Really? Someone must have hijacked your account.

At least they didn't claim to be listening to the LP .

Dear Joe,

How that recording came to me was involved, but in a thread on Dire Straits, not out of place.

A friend of mine had recorded it off the radio, and years ago I had access to Sonic Foundry software and Nero for ripping CDs.

I made a very careful transfer of the tape to CD using a Philps CD recorder and decent cassette player [Sony mini pro machine], and then ripped it to my [then] computer with Windows 98 on it. It was a long time ago!

I then worked on the file with the Sonic Foundry EQ software, which is superb. I experimented and experimented. burned CDs, played them in the CDS 2 for reference, and eventually was pleased enough with the result to let my friend have the GJ remastering back. I don't think he could quite believe the quality that resulted, and had been revealed in the tape under the hiss, as the original tape was not delightful.

Anyway I kept the file, and now it is in iTunes.

The music making seemed altogether more inspired than any of the CDs that were published commercially.

The funny thing is that though it is hardly my main listening, I do play it from time to time. I suppose it reminds me of the times when these songs were played on the mainstream pop radio of the day.

Happy days in reality.

George,

Sounds like a labor of love, esp with names like Sonic Foundry. Ironic that it's now on i-tunes. I just never pictured you as much of a pop/rock fan. But then, I have my occasional forays into classical music. Enjoy!
