So who are the special 50?

"Naim only sold about 50 AV1s in the UK. I have one so it's almost a collectors piece!"
Taken from a Hi-fi Corner topic.
I doubt that all 50 are still in operation–though it would be interesting to see how many still get regular use.
The same question might apply to AV2 / DVD5 / n-Vi (the latter still in use here at home), though these are somewhat more feature-appropriate at this point.
I wonder how many AV2s were old & how many are still in use?
At least one here for starters.
'Old' before their time rackkit?
I know you meant 'sold'.

I have had two, the second one is my present system's heart.

n-Vi still very much in every-day use here, though I think its DVD playing mechanism is creaking a bit so the DVDs get played on my Oppo which feeds the n-VI.
AV2 still in daily use here. DVD5 was sold when it was still worth something.
AV2 in regular use here. Although it had to be repaired recently. Next time it dies, I think that will be it....
Still using my AV2 works really well with my 252.
I wonder how many of its cousin, the n-Vi were sold...
My AV-1 is still in daily use, for music replay only. It feeds an olive 250 that I was too lazy to trade in when I upgraded to 135s.
Theoretically, lack of remote control (for volume and muting) is a limitation, but I rarely have cause to change its settings. Rather like a correctly-adjusted subwoofer, its absence - i.e. when it is muted - is noticed more than its presence.
It was £300 from a bloke in Bedford about 12 years ago, as I remember.

Haha! I'm making more and more mistakes in my 'old' age.
Still using my Av2 but deep deep down id love to see a new Processor from Naim with all the hidef codecs - oh and a 4k Naim blu ray player. With things seeming to be slowing down evolution wise does anyone think Naim will re enter home cinema ? No immediate rush or poss need for a player as i guess many now download movies but the processor would be great.
Just for the sake of completion: I am using my (2nd) AV2 for main stereo sound too: I have tried a lot (believe me!), and a good drive digitally into the AV2 as plain stereo DAC is a very good source. The sound is fleshy but lively, quick, detailed. I really love it. When I had the DVD5 too, I tried it both in analogue with a HiLine into the preamp and in digital, with the DC1, into the AV2 for music, and I always preferred the second configuration...
Long live (hopefully) my AV2.
M.
My AV2 is still in active service, great bit of kit, and great that it has multi-input which I use from my Blu-ray player for HD sound.

I am one of the "50"
Can'r recall when I bought it, about 15 years ago I guess. From the Naim dealer who used to oerate in Congleton, at least I think it was Congleton.
Does it still work Don ? Do you still use it at all ? I remember going to a demo at a hotel locally in the mid 90's. As i remember it worked on a delay from the front speakers to the rear speakers to give a surround sound effect.
There's an AV2 in Glasgow currently for sale on fleaBay, so there's another one accounted for.

Are we counting AV1s or AV2s ?

It still works, but I don't really use it anymore.
I think you are right about the modus operandi. Psudo surround sound generated by a delay arrangement to the rear speakers. The amount of delay was adjustable.
I don't think I was ever overwhelmed by its performance...............
From a review of the time, the delay is fixed at 15ms.
The only controls are volume pots for each channel and a switch to mute/unmute the device as a whole.
I use mine every day and enjoy the fuller sound it imparts to the system. Occasionally, the effects on a given recording can be too gross - as a result of phase differences intrinsic to that recording - and the mute function is called upon.

As the OP of the comment at the start of this thread I can say that I don't use mine (AV1) any more.
Last time I tried it there was a nasty clicking noise coming from it which may have been the unit or the 250 it was connected to. The 250 needed a service which I got done and then I sold it.
So I have an unused AV1 which may or may not be in working order and am wondering what to do with it!

Graham,
Occasioally you see somebody looking for an Olive case - not me, I hasten to add, and I don't know of any such "wanted" adds at the moment, but every now and then, I have seen such an add.
Otherwise treat is as a unique piece of art that one day might, just might, become a collectors' item.

Probably Congleton HiFi as it was known back then, later to become Synergy AV but sadly no longer
involved in standard HiFi. They moved away to Stockport and concentrate on Custom Install - top end of the market stuff.
Shame as I knew the guys pretty well & was often over there as they were the closest to me but they just couldn't make the 2 channel stuff work despite really modernising the listening rooms.

You are probably right, Rackit.
ISTR going up a narrowish flight of stairs to their main demo areas which included a home cinema demo room. I can't remember why we were in Congleton, or why we visited this dealer, only that I bought our AV1 from them.

That's the place. You entered from the back of the building off the car parking area.
You might have dealt with either John or Phil at the time. Phil left to start his own 2 channel business - Cheshire Audio, based in Crewe so not far from Congleton.
I really miss that place & the guys who worked there. I've still yet to sort out a Naim dealer. Chester probably has the two closest to me now & that's a 40 mile journey.
