Minimserver unable to stream 192kHz on DSM 5

Posted by: Sorren on 12 March 2014

Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone on here can help.

I have been using Minimserver (and Minimstreamer) for a few months now on my Synology DS212j and haven't had any problems. Since updating to version 5 of DSM last night I can no longer stream 24/192 music as there are frequent pauses/drop outs. 24/96 music streams fine and the built in server on the Synology is also unable to stream 24/192 files without dropouts.

I'm sure it's not the network as firstly it worked OK before the update and secondly the UQ2 and NAS are connected using CAT7 cable through a gigabit switch so hires streaming shouldn't be a problem.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem and maybe have a work around? Minim was also updated last night but as Synology's server also displays this problem I don't think it's a fault with Minim. Nothing in the NAS or Minim logs jumps out at me so ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps a change in the Ethernet frame size?

I see that you have already done what I would have suggested. (post on the MinimStreamer forum). Please keep us informed if you get an answer there.

Have you also raised a support request with Synology?

As Bananahead said this sounds most likely to be some sort of interaction between your NAS operating system and UPnP DLNA server program with respect to I/O that was introduced with the upgrade and best raise on their respective support channels.

DSM 5 beta, I think.

While I often am anxious to get the latest, I passed on the 5 beta a while ago and would rather the bugs be worked out before I adopt.  In this world of streaming, "If it aint broke don't fix it" really applies.  I understand why folks can be loathe to update when something works.

DSM5 also now supports streaming DSD.  Not that there are any Naim devices to receive it.

I am running dsm 5  build 4458 and playing 192, transcoding from flac to wav with no drop outs. However, the cpu is at 99% on my 212j and any other load on the 212 does cause drop outs.

Thank's for your input everyone. We had a power cut this morning and when everything came back up the 24/192s are playing as normal with a CPU load of 40-55% while transcoding FLAC to WAV so I have no idea what was going on last night. I restarted the NAS box several times while trying to get it working so it shouldn't be that.

Anyway all working now so I'm happy (for the moment anyway).
