NDX streamer : extra power supply ?
Posted by: Koenr on 14 March 2014
Hello
I'm new on this forum because i've just bought a Naim set : Nait XS2 + streamer NDX with PMC Twenty 23 speakers. Very satisfied.
However , i read a lot about upgrading and I was wondering if an upgrade with a power supply extra would be usefull ? An extra power supply for the Nait XS2 of for the NDX streamer ? I heard that Naim prefers the source or what do you think ? Sorry for my englisch , i'm origin Dutch speaker. thanks for answer
You've got a few options to upgrade both your amp and NDX with a power supply not to mention power cables, interconnects and speaker cable but.......
Best advice is to get everything run in, find out what your system sounds like and then, if you have both curiosity and funds, go and visit your Naim dealer to discuss and demo the various options to see if you like what they do.
its very important to give you kit time to run in though as if it's all new, it will take a few months to come fully on song.
Hi Koenr
IanG advice is good here.
from recent experience, definitely source 1st!
I would leave well alone as you have a good system there, enjoy it and play loads of music

Not withstanding the advice above, and if you don't mind used equipment, a second hand non-DR 555PS can be found for reasonable money.
It really is transformative on sources.

Ok thanks for answer ! I will follow your advice and run in first. A few months is this only for speakers or also for the NDX and Nait xs2 ?

For your naim equipment too.

My PMCs took about four months to run in. The manual suggests they need only a few hours, which is complete nonsense. Give the system till the summer and see how it sounds then. Don't forget to ensure you have a good stand to put the Naim bits on.
I got my new PMC 23s yesterday: great potential obviously, but at the moment they don't sound that much better than the DB1is I've had for two and a half years. According to PMC, they need 15 hours to be properly run in - which is very optimistic. I would agree with HH: wait until you decide to upgrade.
I swear my NDX took 4 months to run in also. It didn't have the bottom end heft and authority that the demo unit did until then. I wasn't convinced with the XPS2 non-DR on my NDX. The source power supplies aren't cheap either. Judging by the comments on here, a SuperNait 2 in place of the Nait XS might give you a better result for a similar outlay. The NDX is a great machine even bare. In fact I think of it more highly than any of the Naim boxes I have owned. I think it has a lovely big, balanced sound on it's own. Oh and lastly, PowerLines really work. They're a good way of improving performance without changing the character of the system as a black box change often does.
Yes I agree, let everything settle down / run in. Get used to the sound you get, then look at tweaks/upgrades. FWIW I prefer the NDX on its own with no off board PSU. However I find the Hiline interconnect provides an attractive improvement.
