When HDX goes dark!

Posted by: Nagual on 18 March 2014

My unit developed a recent bout of electronic flu.  So much so that its gone back to the factory.  Imagine my dismay at the thought of spending the next few weeks having to actually listen to CD's! The same artist track after track - and then getting up off the sofa  to hunt for another one while my ipad lies idle! Actually using the digital out of the DVD5 into the DAC/555 ps sounded great put I missed my easy access to my whole collection on the readyNAS.

So looking around the house I thought to myself - I must have some other options here. I'm a gadget junkie after all.  So I spotted the Popcorn c 200 machine gathering dust on top of the bookshelf - multimedia tank - the box said.  That's gotta work.  Nope, sees the NAS gets about half way through one track then dies.

Hang on a minute, there's an Xbox one sitting right above the empty space where HDX once lived that's cutting edge - gotta work!  Nope, more than happy for you to stream music if you buy a music pass you can pay to listen to - most of - your favourite musicians in their catalogue but you need to pay a monthly fee.  The quality isn't stunning and forget the fact you already bought this stuff on CD or download. Time to pay again!

Oddly enough dragging in my old Xbox 360 and plugging that into the DAC does seem to have given me some short term respite and now I have full access to the NAS.

Please god send my HDX back to me soon or find me the cash for an NDS I beg!

I feel for you Nagual.

Any idea how long the repair will take?

I thought my HDX was also on its way out last week but it turned out to be a network issue.

Cheers,
Scott.

Thanks Scott.  The men in the know at Grahams were expecting about a 3 week turn around so I will know more come the end of the week I hope. The machine is around 5 years old now and thus far I have no clue as to the extent of the fault/faults.  There had been some running problems in  the build up to the big freeze but hopefully they will get it back on its feet. I sure do miss it.

Warranty period 5 years... date of fault  5yrs + 1 week ?    That's normal electrical appliance behaviour, isn't it ?   (But thank goodness there's nothing 'normal' about Naim though).

Well it's back. Fair amount of work done. Took its time to find its sea legs again but so far so good. I had really missed the streaming and the using the app. I almost got desperate and reached out for an NDS!  But decoded to hold onto the savings for a 552. Soon I hope.

My NDS display has packed in. I wouldn't expect it to happen to you if you "reached for" a new one, but it's ironic you mentioned it. Well, it is to me.

Sorry to hear that Harry. I would have been lost without my dealer nearby to get things sorted out for me ASAP. I suppose a failed display won't halt the music but it's damned annoying.

It hasn't halted the music for a millisecond. The dealer is confident it can be fixed on their premises. Though it is currently on its second display (and may be heading for a third) it find it hard to get annoyed with the NDS because it is so musical, if peripherally irritating with all these dodgy displays. I just couldn't help smiling when you mentioned it in the context of what you've been through. If it was out of warranty I probably wouldn't bother until some other extended system shutdown requirement reared for another reason, like servicing.

However, much as I forgive it, if someone questioned the reliability I wouldn't be able to defend it - at any retail price. But at least it still sounds sublime.
