Mike Oldfield Story & Tubular Bells, BBC4 Fri 21st March

Posted by: ChrisH on 22 March 2014

Anyone see this last night?

he was a bit before my time, guess always thought Tubular Bells wasn't my cup of tea.

Think I changed my mind watching this last night.

Great documentary on Mike Oldfield with a lot about Tubular Bells, followed by the live performance of it in 1974 (I think).

Unexpected from my perspective, but well worth watching.

Saw it a few weeks ago as part of a longer documentary.

I'm pretty certain Mick Taylor  formerly of the J.Mayall BluesBreakers and the Rolling Stones is one of the guitarists. The other guitarist looks familiar but I can't place his name.

You're right Graham. Mick Taylor was mentioned.

I saw it last night & the previous transmission

- audio via the Naim machinery of course

Yes Mick Taylor was in the line up but only with some of the pubic performances.

Mike Oldfield played almost everything on the TB recording - that was the whole idea of the project - with woodwind, some percussion, string bass & vocals by others.

TBH I prefer Tubular Bells 2,  this was his first release with Warner after the breakup - thats an interesting side story - with Virgin. It was a sequel in a very similar style & format as TB released in 1992. IMO its more polished, better audio & sonic effects & not as long winded & drawn out.
