Playback calls it quits

Posted by: Arthur Geraerts on 26 March 2014

The maker behind the popular music server Playback, Yazsoft has stopped development. No new builds will be released and the app itself will disappear eventually.

I used Playback for FLAC streaming to my UnitiQute 2, it was basically the only server that worked flawlessly, although I still had some issues with it (no album covers for example).

So I'm looking for a new solution, hoping to stumble on something even better maybe, but to no avail. EyeConnect is dead as well... Is there no market for an affordable FLAC server that supports album covers? How hard can it be to develop something like this. I'm wondering what NAIM's take is on this, seen they advertise with Playback as being the best streaming solution.

Time for a dedicated NAIM app maybe? Something that works flawlessly with (an updated, swankier) N-Stream?

I was assured by dBPoweramp yesterday that the "shipping" release of the OSX version of Asset UPnP (rather than the Beta) is due for release within the next couple of weeks ...

Cheers

I'm testing Asset as we speak. I have to say, it's the most promising server app I've seen to date. Easy  to configure to your own needs. Already tried Serviio, Minimserver and UMS this morning, but they're all crap.

Asset is the only UPnP server (other than our own of course) that I ever feel happy about suggesting that customers use - the other NAS based and OSX based UPnP servers have all proven themselves to be fairly fundamentally flawed in various ways.

Finally album covers while streaming FLAC files! I can finally see what I'm listening to, now how hard was that? Buying expensive (but awesome!) audio equipment while having to use crap freeware server apps to play your music just feels wrong. I'm happy to pay these guys 19 dollars for their troubles (if they promise they won't quit development within a year that is).

If only they could change they icon for the app, 'cause it's fugly... I'm a purist, that's why I bought NAIM. Make it customizable!

On the other hand, if this turns out to be the only gripe I have with this app, then we surely have a winner.

Well you could have used a UnitiServe ...

That's on my wish list. But as long I have a Mac mini for all my media streaming in the house it's not on the top of the list. The NAP 100 is though :-)

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek but I think that this short thread does make a very important point...

I spend a lot of my time trying to help out customers who are fighting issues caused by substandard UPnP servers built into NASs and on Windows / OSX ... it is very poorly understood that the browsing and functionality experience that you get is dependent upon the functionality of the UPnP server itself, for example I often get asked "I just bought a Naim Streamer and I can't see the such-and-such option - it was there when I had a demo in the shop" and of course they're using a different UPnP server to the one used in the shop.

We obviously want the customer experience to be as good as it can be when using our products and so hopefully this thread will be a useful flag to people in the future that the UPnP server *DOES* make a difference to the experience that you have and using the "freebie" applications (such as Windows Media Players UPnP server) isn't necessarily a good idea...

Hi Phil -

Am sure Mr. Spoon will appreciate your endorsement!

Thanks the heads-up on Asset for Mac. Any news on the timeline for QNAP?

ATB.

Although I do not disagree on this in any way I have to say that it's a pity that this is not as clearly stated in the product manuals.  One can very easily get the impression that WMP is more than adequate for the task. Rewriting the manuals might be a good idea to consider in order to reduce the confusion in this area. Just a thought …

Serviio.... works perfectly, is free.

As per the O.P's earlier posting:

"Already tried Serviio, Minimserver and UMS this morning, but they're all crap!"

Perhaps Serviio didn't provide the functionality the O.P. requires?

I found Serviio to be not intuitive enough, it crashed on two different macs and it didn't give me enough control over my library. I tested it and just didn't like it. Could be I didn't delve into it deep enough, but I've been playing around with Asset since noon and that one just works flawlessly and does exactly what I need. It has room for improvement, but since it's in beta I'm not compla

Hi, Arthur,

What did you dislike about minimserver?  I prefer it slightly to Asset: I like the way it lists tracks better, using default settings for both,  though the diff I see might be eliminated with a configuration change; and I like the way you can manage it from a different computer.

I did not notice a difference w resp to album art -- I do not have that well in hand yet -- I had thought this is mostly a matter of tagging correctly and getting the art where the server can find it, whatever system it uses.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Sorry... Missed the OP's mention of Serviio. The latest version is better than previous, but in general I've always found it worked the best of what I have tried.

Curious now about Assett though... Haven't looked at that one, and am not averse to paying for good software :-)

I do hope that Asset will have a version that will run on Synology. You cannot fault the later in terms of hardware and over solutions but the Media Server is errr..

Ok lets just say it is like N-Stream to Naim streamer! :-)
