Summer work / experience for student in France or Germany

Posted by: Sloop John B on 26 March 2014

My daughter studies European studies in Trinity College and the two languages she does are French and German. She will have her first year completed this June.

So far she is not having much luck in obtaining work or experience in France or Germany for the summer which would be very useful for her to practice the language.

This is not a money generating exercise it is merely to gain experience  in speaking languages so she would be willing to work for board and food. There are a number of websites offering various opportunities but my fear would be that she  could be exploited in some of the positions available.

If any on my French or German Naim colleagues could help point me in a direction to facilitate my daughter in procuring such a place I would be very grateful.

Perhaps even some of my non-French or German Naim colleagues have found one of their children in a similar situation and would have some advice.

Thanks in advance,
John.

I don't know a specific job offering, but in Germany the DAAD is the official organisation that helps foreign students with their studies in Germany and they also have a page about internships ("Praktika"):

Perhaps this is a good starting point?

In 1964 I had an internship in Copenhagen arranged through IASTE - International Association for the Exchange of Students for Techinal Experience

IASTE are still in business so go have a look at

http://www.britishcouncil.org/iaeste.htm

I came across them last at Dulles Airport in 2000 where a group of people where being met to be taken to a conference.

Thanks for your replies, 2 interesting sites.

My daughter was aware of the first one and having looked at the second one the same thing applies – 2014 placements application times have passed.

1964 the year before I was born, I imagine that was a great year to do a foreign placement, exciting times and wonderful times musically.

If anyone else has anything and would prefer not to post it here my email address is in my profile.
Many thanks,
John

Another thought

Does your employer or business associates have contacts in Europe - if so now is the time to see if they can help.

As for application dates being past - take that only as guidance and contact the humans behind the websites to see if there are any spare positions, often a third priority placement could have some interesting aspects.
