How to play 24/192
Posted by: Analog74 on 02 April 2014
I've had my Unitiqute 2 for a little while now and was wondering how to play back 24/192 files. Try as I might but I also seem to be able to play 24/96 over the network.
Do I have to connect directly? Kind of defeats the object of having a streamer. Is there a way of doing this over a network?
UQ2 supports "FLAC and WAV (up to 32bit/192kHz via UPnP and USB only)." What are you trying to play? flac or wav at 24/192 plays fine over the UPnP network as long as your server isn't down-sampling. What server are you using?

Hi
I also play 24/192 files on my UQ2. If you use wireless you end up with a "buffer" issue where the music stops and starts. However I have plugged my router into a power line and I run an Ethernet cable from another power line to the UQ and it works perfectly. I am using FLAC files on my NAS.
The power line is a great way to stream music. I also have another power line in my office with a SONOS plugged in and I can stream music from my NAS drive and Qobuz. to my play 1 speaker.
Thanks for your responses.
I recently purchased a QNAP HS-210 and moved my music library over to it. All the content was encoded using ALAC, even the 24/192 stuff I downloaded. I still maintain the library using iTunes via the file share, but use Minimserver to publish over uPNP.
Bart, you pretty much answered my question. Thank you. So if I was to transcode to WAV then I should be able to listen 24/192. I believe Minimserver allows me to do this now and the QNAP should be more than enough to handle it.
Simon, I'm having the same buffering issues as you when listening to 24/96, so wireless is out of the question. I also just brought a set of Netgear Powerline AV500's to try.
Fingers crossed.
Great news.....it should work perfectly with the power line. I have been using one for about 3 months now and no issue what so ever. Plays 24/192 perfectly and the sound is amazing.
@Simoncarr do power line work with 24/192 WAV files? I'm sure it does with 24/192 FLAC but wonder if 24/192 WAV is too much.
I have an airport express used as a wireless bridge for my ND5XS on a dedicated n 5ghz wireless network that provides a measured 300mps connection (bridge is 12 feet away from router in an open space) and it works well with up to 24/96 WAV or 24/192 FLAC but can't normally cope with 24/192 WAV
Hi Dambor
Good question....I am not sure. All my files are converted to FLAC so have never tried with WAV files...would be interested to know from anyone else if WAV works with power lines.
Well, the Powerlines seem to have done the trick. 24/96 seems solid, but anything higher and I run into buffering problems. I do need to clean the power arrangement up so I have direct access to sockets rather than through a extension, which I know isn't ideal.
Transcoding in Minimserver works a treat on the NS-210 and sounds bloody marvellous. Having the music on a NAS is definitely the way to go. Cleans up all sorts of problems with playback.
Hi
Yes I was told that Power lines need to be plugged directly into the mains circuit and that I couldn't use an extension cable. I converted my external garage in to an office, but was too far for from my wireless router, but ir is on the same mains circuit. So I have one power line plugged into my router and then 3 other ones receiving data. 1 to my Naim, 1 to my Laptop in the office/Garage and 1 for my SONOS play in the office/garage and it all works perfectly. I am in a new house so I assume the state of my mains cables are in good order.
Everything I've read here over the years about ethernet over powerlines is that there is no guarantees -- there is much variability from home to home in the condition of the wiring and the presence of interferences. If it works, great. If not, another solution is required.
One may also want to buy a long piece of cat6 cable and run it just to listen to the difference. Some find that ethernet over powerlines is inferior to a dedicated ethernet cabling run. There are emi reasons why this might be, but the empirical evidence is probably best - have a listen.
Bart, totally agree. While the Powerlines are a convenient solution, they are open to all kinds of interference. Today, as I was listening, the washing machine was going downstairs and I struggled to get any 24/96 through. I also noticed an amber/red light on the Powerline nearest the NAS, also downstairs. After the wash completed the light was back to green. Not really an issue when listening late at night, but still.
A dedicated gigabit wired network is definitely what's needed. I was trying to avoid plumbing CATx through the house. Anyway, back to tinkering.
So, after spending the weekend tinkering, I'm please to report steady streaming of transcoded 24/192 ALAC to WAV over Powerlines.
1. Connected the NAS to a Powerline using a dedicated socket
2. Did the same for the Unitiqute
Saves me having to run cables all over the gaff. Especially useful for those who are renting and can't make changes to the property.
Also replaced all the network cables with CAT6 shielded, just to be on the safe side.
Now all I need is a comfy chair.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Enjoy!
Perfect...I am glad its working fine.....great news
