Martin Carthy in Havant!
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 03 April 2014
How exciting.... Martin Carthy is playing at The Spring in sunny Havant on 29 May. The man is a legend, and he's playing two miles from my house. No need to travel to skanky London. You can buy a beer from the bar, drink it while you listen and no doubt get your CDs signed and have a chat afterwards. Marvellous.
Clearly, no one gives a toss. I'm still excited though.
A great artist and I cannot believe it but I have just realised that I missed him playing at Kings Place in London which is where my London office is.
Doh!
Clearly, no one gives a toss. I'm still excited though.

It's a long time since I heard anyone say they were excited about the prospect of a visit to Havant!
Normally, the only reason to go to Havant is to get something from Waitrose. Now, for one day only, there is another.
I read it quickly as Martin Carthy in heaven and thought that poor blighter had passed on so thankfully that's not the case.
I saw him with the Waterson family in the National Concert Hall in Dublin and it was one of the best concerts I have ever been at -absolutely sublime.

Sorry!!
The Spring is very different to the National Concert Hall...... It seats about 120, there's no raised stage and as we are sitting in the second row Martin will be about 20 feet away.

Two more reasons: Julia Fordham is playing there on 8 & 9 November. Miss the lovely Julia at your peril!
Nigel,
as if that excitement was not enough....June Tabor (well, Quercus actually) are playing at the Turner Sims at Southampton University on Saturday the 12th.
Now, she's someone else I'd love to see. But we have friends coming for dinner on the 12th, so I'll just have to listen to the album on the stereo.
I have the same feeling having Richard Thompson performing at our local art centre.
My favourite RT album is Live at Crawley 1993, which we bought at the Hawth the following year. Seek it out if you don't have it. The Spring is about a 50th the size of The Hawth: if you like Martin Carthy, pop down.
Never seem Martin C, we quite like him though. I'll check it out.
What do you know. Four hours before the start, we get a call to say that the gig is rescheduled to 7 November. I've been beside myself with excitement all week, and now I'll have to stay in. Bugger!
That sounds gutting.
But look on the bright side, at least they phoned you!
Go and getyourself a nice little tipple and enjoy listening to MC at home.
Have no fear, a bottle of Southern Italian red is open, Hilary is chopping garlic and The Archers is on. And at 9 it's the Good Wife on More 4. Could be worse - but I was not a happy bunny earlier.
Make the best of it HH. Enjoy your unplanned evening!
