The Brits 2011

Posted by: nicnaim on 15 February 2011

Of the artists on show tonight I have albums by Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons (who I have also seen live), but I was somewhat underwhelmed by most of what was on display.  I like Adelle's voice, but was not impressed by the song she sang tonight.

Any reaction from you guys, or are we all too old for this new stuff?

Regards

Those are the only 2 albums of the Brits crop that I have too. Nothing else moves me.

Same here. To be honest I'm quite impressed and surprised I'm that cool

Yes, of course.

I only saw bits of it as I was listening to the football, but I did see Mumford & Sons. I'd never heard any of their stuff before...  are they always that bad?

Chief,

When I saw Mumford & Sons live, I thought they had about three good tracks, much like the album, but the rest was pretty repetitive.  They do angst very well, and the audience (of mainly students) loved them, but I am would not rush to see them again.

It strikes me from tonight's ceremony there was more emphasis on the number of hits you got on you tube, than on the actual quality of the music.  Call me old fashioned, but I think talent, and the quality of the tunes is important.

Mumford strikes as a poor-mans Fleet Foxes.

The foxes, as beautiful as they sound, lack the cohesiveness of the Mumford's, when you really get into their album I don't think the styles quite blend - I look forward to the new album which has been a long time coming.

The Mumfords album on the other hand is a masterpiece - nice to see them getting some commercial success

All my opinion of course

Adele singing Someone Like You was pure class.

I must be getting old.
Most of the artists I had never heard of and even those I had I did not like.
Adele being the only exception.

I just checked out the Adele and Mumford performances. Bothe very good , it's the best that I've heard from Adele, she's always sounded ,I don't know , "shouty" or "forced" on record.
Mumford all round one mike, brave and difficult to pull off, they did seem a bit rigid though(maybe the single mike?) ,unlike the "electric" Grammys performance.

Seemed no point in finding any other performances from the Brits, like Trevor  said, who?

Let's face it The Brits isn't aimed at us at all but at an mainstream ITV audience who probably think Arcade Fire are a punk rock group.  How do take That That qualify as a "band"??

Any music awards show that allows the public to vote is in serious trouble from the off ....15 yr old girls will vote in their 1000's - mature listeners simply don't bother - hence the Justin Bieber's of this world winning best international act awards (!!)

I happen to like The Mumfords but as soon as they become really popular they'll fall out of favour in forums like this as many older musos prefer to be seen to big up obscure artists.
Let's be honest we've all been guilty of music snobbery at times yes?

I have been an occasional watcher of the Brits since the eighties, and to be honest nothing has changed. I agree with Jet, it is mainstream "music" for the masses who in my opinion are not in it for long term musical satisfaction. Throw as many catchy hooks at them and you get instantly appealing ( or is that appalling) tunes, which are, at the flip of a coin instantly forgettable.
