Streaming newbie with DLNA/UPnP question

Posted by: Will99 on 19 April 2014

Hi,

I have a Buffalo Linkstation NAS which has an iTunes and a DLNA server on it. There is no mention either in the NAS web interface or online product literature of any UPnP server.

I have my iTunes library stored on the NAS (mostly in mp3) and I can happily sync my iPod with the library on the NAS, and I can also stream my iTunes library from the NAS to various Sonos components around the house.

Now I am demoing Naim amps and streamers at home, and have been re-ripping my CDs to another shared folder on the NAS (separate from my iTunes library) in ALAC format.

However, although the Naim streamer and n-stream app can see these ALAC files, the streamer won't play them. The streamer complains that the files are not in the correct file format.

As well as the DLNA server, do I also need to install a UPnP server on the NAS in order to stream files to a Naim streamer ?

I should add that the NDX streamer has version 3.22 firmware installed, which I understand supports ALAC ?

Will, a DLNA server IS a UPnP server for these general purposes.  "Media Server" is what you're looking for on it, I believe.

Naim players do support ALAC (up to 24/96), so it's not clear what's wrong.

The above said, there may be something that the particular server on that nas is doing that's out of the ordinary -- again, not clear what's wrong.

Probably there's just a confusion about the files that the UPnP server sees and what the streamer sees?

Have you tried to start a re-index of your music files in the UPnP server, after you have copied/changed something for the last time there?

If that is not enough, delete the caches in n-Serve and delete the app from the multitaskin view and restart it.

I tried ripping a cd to FLAC, and for some reason my NAS went in to Engineer / Emergency Mode which meant I had to update the firmware on the NAS which after some time I managed to do.

Anyway on recovering the use of the NAS I found I can play the FLAC files no problem, but still can't play the ALAC files (actually Apple Lossless is .m4a file extension right ?).

According to n-stream the 'Streamer version is 3.22', but I can't find a way to confirm this via the NDX front panel.

The only DLNA options that I can see are via the NAS web interface, and very limited i.e. specifying which shared folder on the NAS to serve the files from. So not sure how to 're-index files' or anything within the UPnP/DLNA server program.

I don't mind ripping to FLAC, but was planning on using ALAC so I can put my library on my iPod, and of course Naim streamers should play ALAC ...

Seems like the dealer would have an interest in helping you with this.  Its really amazing how often this kind of issue comes up. (Totally fair question Will - I'm not implying you shouldn't have asked it.) This still isn't completely straight forward.  Specifying the shared folder should do the trick, however.

Well my NAS DLNA options point to a folder 'Music' where all my ripped files are - both ALAC and FLAC - but still only the FLAC files will play on the streamer. One thing I have noticed, but I'm not sure if it is relevant - when I browse the Music folder and look at the properties by right-clicking on a file - the ALAC files say they 'Open with Windows Media Player' but the FLAC files Open with 'Unknown program'.

One other thing - I have confirmed on the front panel that the streamer is running with 3.22 firmware

Which Naim streamer do you have? I thought early ones (such as my Qute) couldn't play Apple files (or at least without upgrading the boards)

It's an NDX on home demo so not sure when it was built. It's running the latest firmware (3.22 version).

Would have thought that wouldn't have this issue

Just tried powering down and restarting the NAS but still it's only playing the FLAC files.

Selecting music Via n-stream the ALAC files generate a "Can't play - skipped track" message,

and selecting via the NDX's front panel the ALAC files generate a "Can't play - Unsupported file format" message.

Mmm.. Checking the NDX manual, under Chapter 8 NDX Specifications, it says the following :-

So does this imply I can only play ALAC via an iPod connected to the USB port on the front of the NDX ?

Formats

Audio formats supported: Internet radio (Windows Media-formatted content, MP3 streams, MMS) Playlists (M3U, PLS) MP3, AAC (up to 320kbit/s, CBR/VBR) Apple Lossless (from iPod) Windows Media-formatted content-9 (up to 320kbit/s) WAV and FLAC (up to 24bit/96kHz via UPnP or USB only) AIFF, Ogg Vorbis

I created a new thread for this breaking news ...

I use dbPoweramp to convert my Apple loseless files to FLAC to play on my Qute.  It's an extra step but one that hardly takes any time.
