New HDX owner needs advice....
Posted by: NIC NAP on 23 April 2014
Just purchased a secondhand Naim HDX ( 2008 model ) which I am very pleased with but I am encountering a problem with the built in CD player. The HDX is not yet configured for streaming and I am using it to play back hard disc stored music and also use it as a CD playback device. The HDX came with a new Naim remote control. My problem is that the HDX will not play CD's. I insert a disc and nothing happens, I have pressed the CD function on the remote then pressed the play button but again nothing appears to be happening . I tried to bind the new remote again ( grateful to know the exact buttons that I need to press to re bind the new remote ) and the remote now works fine controlling the hard disc playback but not the CD playback functions. I have used the front touch panel to see CD's would work... but again no joy. Any ideas ? Thanks for your help.
Does it rip OK and is it set to 'rip and play' as opposed to just rip?

Thanks for the reply. I have tried both functions, to play or to rip. When I insert a CD nothing seems to happen. I do not hear the disc spinning in the drive so I wonder if there is a fault.

I had one or two cd's where that happened out of 900 rips - Copy protection or a thin disc were the culprits. Sometimes copying to a CD-R helped.
Otherwise no idea, sorry.

I have tried a number of CD's ( some are new ) and still no joy.
Complete restart is all I can suggest now.

Is there a factory reset function ?
Have you gone into Settings and checked that the CD playback option is selected? By default it rips. It has to be set to do one or the other.
Sounds like you've covered this off but stupid questions are sometimes worth asking?
As with other replies above, have a look on n serve to ensure you have the unit set to play mode rather than rip.
Also note from your original post, the HDX is a server and NOT a streamer
Thanks for all your assistance so far. I have the changed the settings from rip to play but still nothing,I suspect there might be a fault with the CD drive. Does anybody else have any other ideas ?

How is the HDX connected to the rest of the hi fi?
My HDX is not yet connected to the internet by ethernet cable. I am using the HDX to play back content that is stored on the internal hard disc, music which plays back through my amplifier. The problem is the HDX will not play CD's or rip. Any ideas why not ?
This may be a silly reply, has the hdx have a puck on the cd.

No
It will either rip or play back depending on what option is selected. If it is doing neither and a hard reset hasn't fixed it, it looks likely that the CD mechanism has developed a fault. Best get it looked at. The mechanism on the HDX looks like a bog standard Micky Mouse affair so I'm sure there won't be a problem with parts.
Have you checked that the large blanking plug at the back of the HDX is fully inserted?
Must it not be connected to internet when you rip..It search for what album it is song mm..? Think you should test to connect it .
Thanks for all your help. The rear blanking plug is fitted correctly on the back. There has been a mention that the HDX needs to be connected to the internet in order for it to access the music database. Is this the root of my problem ? That the machine needs an internet connection for the CD playback and ripping functions to work ?. Like to know if other HDX users can play CD's from their units without an active internet connection.

HDX doesn't need to be connected to the internet to play CDs or to play from internal hard drive.
You don't need an internet connection to rip either. The HDX will read enough information off the CD to catalogue it and uses an internal database for more detailed information and cover art. It uses the internet connection to interrogate a bigger repository of data. If no network/internet connection is available and/or the HDX can't determine what the CD is, it will still rip it and give it a generic artist name and album title, something like Unknown and Albumxyz123. So your issue does not reside here. Sounds like a dodgy mech.
I think it's time to contact your friendly dealer in order to ask for assistance...

Anyone know what the boot-up time for an HDX is?
Mine arrived from e-bay earlier and was plugged in about 30 minutes ago.
It's found the network and got to the "please wait" screen and then quickly cycled to the Home screen and straight back to the wait screen a couple of times.
Do I just leave it doing its thing, or do I start getting worried?
The boot up time varies according to RAM. I think three minutes is generous, call it five tops. My unit boots in around a minute. Ish - I've never sat down and timed it. Sounds like yours is not finding the network and the first thing to do is a hard reset. Wouldn't hurt to reset the hub first.
