I think he had just listened briefly to one of the 'extras'. You know Stu. Don't shoot the messenger.

Posted on: 18 May 2014 by ewemon

John Davis posted on another forum that the cd's will come from the same masters as the itunes downloads and that they weren't compressed.  However he didn't mention that they may have had peak or light limiting used on them which seems to have been the case.

Graham which forum? No links I know.

Graham. HI Fi Kabin check out the post by Carlton the Door Man  In the LZ music thread.

This is one post on an obscure forum by a guy who likes the 1980s Barry Diament masters. Devotees of the Diaments tend to be fanatically devoted to them. Some of them are better than the Page/Marino masters of the 1990s, some of them aren't (all of them are of course better than Mothershit). I think some people are so wedded to the BDs because they feel they haven't been fiddled with at all - which is true, but some of them (PG and IV especially) sound bloody awful.

In other words, it means sod all. Let your own ears decide on 2nd June.

Why couldn't Jimmy Page taken on board the criticism of the previous poor quality reissues like Mothership and Celebration and realise he's now tone deaf? I wish someone like Kevin Grey could do the remastering. I did predict the would probably be poor on an earlier Led Zep thread. I'm sorry to be proved right.

Why are you posting about something you haven't actually heard yourself? You are just relying on hearsay, like so many other people on this thread.

I HAVE heard the CDs (albeit not on my home turf on my own system but via a 44/16 stream through a friend's system) and I thought they were fine. Better than expected, especially III. Possibly (probably) not on a par with a Ludwig II or HOTH, or the Classics, but these won't set you back three figures.

But the really important thing is that the extra material is ESSENTIAL. The sort of stuff you'd listen to many times more than once (as is so often the case with outtakes and extras). Sometimes it is even revelatory, and for me this extra material is up there with the best of the Beatles' Anthology series.

I think all thus FUD about sound quality, none of which seems to be based on first-hand experience, is becoming really wearying. Why don't you all wait until you've heard before passing judgement? After all, isn't one of the mantras of the Hi-Fi Corner section of this forum, "let your ears decide"?

We're talking about previously unavailable Led Zep, FFS!

Kevin BD didn't do IV that was Joe Sidore if memory serves me well.

I am in the BD school with the versions that I have heard as I thought Jimmy's last attempt at them wasn't that great.

With BD's on my system they are crankable even the PG with cough version but Jimmy's gave me earache.

By the way Kevin personally I ain't a BD devotee but do like a lot of his work not it all but a lot.

Unfortunate that JP cannot get his act together and produce a decent  remaster. Should stick to playing i guess. Mind you LZs original masters  were nothing to write home about in the first place. Good job the music speaks for itself. As long as they don't let that bloke from porcushite tree get anywhere them, I'm fine.

Posted on: 20 May 2014 by sheffieldgraham

Hi' Kevin,

As I said, I don't have the I,II,III "originals" on vinyl. That's one reason I'm buying, but more importantly I'm buying them for the extra stuff. Who knows if there will ever be another opportunity.

O.K. some might say JP will find a way in future.

p.s. Thanks for your and others input , clearly more knowledgeable than me.

.. but it's on Led Zeppelin.com.

So JP say's it's all been remastered by John Davis who did Mothershit and Constipation Day.

Posted on: 21 May 2014 by Steve J

Yes Char. I'll keep my order in for the extra material though.

Old news, Steve.

But as I said a few posts back, fortunately, from my hearing of all this material three weeks ago, it is definitely better than Mothershit.

Of course I cannot talk about the vinyl, because I haven't heard it yet. Although that hasn't stopped the entire internet passing comment and spreading FUD about something they have yet to hear.

The extra material is absolutely brilliant Steve - and they only scratched the surface with that playback session.

The most interesting thing I got from the stream was the fact that Page had found WIPs and alternate takes from the Presence sessions.

The view has always been, that because it was recorded comparatively quickly (three weeks), there was no extra material for Presence. They've certainly never been bootlegged. Turns out we were all wrong. This, coupled with the rumours about some "revelatory" material for the PG and Coda sets, gets my pulse fair racing.

Posted on: 21 May 2014 by Kevin-W

For those who missed the stream (it's still up), this is what was played:

  1. Good Times Bad Times/Communication Breakdown (Live in Paris 10-10-69)
  2. You Shook Me (Live in Paris 10-10-69)
  3. Heartbreaker (rough mix with vocal)
  4. Whole Lotta Love (rough mix with vocal)
  5. Gallows Pole (rough mix)
  6. Since I've Been Loving You (rough mix of first recording with vocal)
  7. Immigrant Song (Alternate version)
  8. Keys To The Highway/Trouble in Mind (rough mix with vocal)

I think the SIBLY rough mix is better than the one finally released.

Kevin-W,

I just want to applaud your knowledge, enthusiasm, and perspective. Not only on this Led Zep thread, but others also. Good on yer mate. I read most of 'em and am grateful for your input.

Keep eating, drinking, smoking, not smoking, baiting rug..bugs..., and nailing halfwits.

You Saarf London Geezer.

It's not beyond the bounds of pissibolity that these new Zep records may give lots of people pleasure, despite the moaning.

If not maybe we should remember something Spike Milligan once said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder - get it out with Optrex"

Cheers

Seems like HOTH and IV are due out Oct and PG sometime next year.

PG will be out 24th February 2015, its 40th anniversary. Rumours are that it will be quite a set. I hope so - nothing less than an octuple LP will do for me .

The last three albums - Presence, ITTOD and Coda will follow in September 2015, I believe.

Posted on: 21 May 2014 by Clive B

HOTH is definitely one I will be purchasing again. That'll be my fourth copy I think, not including all the tracks on the original 4-box and 2-box remasters. That's one LZ studio album that's worth revisiting, along with the first and maybe Presence (IMHO). I certainly look forward to the extras from the HOTH sessions and would certainly welcome some early cuts of TSRTS just to seek greater clarity in the guitar track.

Posted on: 21 May 2014 by mrclick

Brilliant news there is more to come from the Presence sessions.

Percy wasn't very well because of the car crash, although he did a good job from his wheelchair, but the band were really cooking at that time, in my view. Looking forward to hearing extra tracks.

That is very kind of you Mr Click, thank you.

Posted on: 22 May 2014 by anderson.council

Hear hear Mr Click. It's good to have some well informed insight on these releases. Well done Kev.

Just heard the alt-Immigrant Song on Simon Mayo. Not too different until the ending with some different treatment to the vocals.

Jimmy Page will be on Simon's show on Wed June 4th discussing these releases.

Cheers

Scott

PS Regarding the reported possible law suit on behalf of Randy California, claiming that Stairway is based on Spirit's Taurus. I read years ago about this but had ever actually heard Taurus so I dialled it up on Spotify yesterday. I think they are grasping at funding old age with this one - I smell lawyer up to no good all over it. Never mind,  even if they are successful LZ can then sue Eric Clapton. EC admits in his autobiography that he'd ripped off the main theme to use in Let it Grow (albeit unknowingly) Page 160 for anyone sad enough to care
