SSDP advertisement interval on Synology

Posted by: Professor Fink on 25 April 2014

Hi everyone

Has anyone perfected a setting for this value? I'm using the native Mediaserver software on a Synology DS214 play with a wired ethernet connection to a UnitiQute 2.

This value is having some effect on my connection dropping...

1. Set to default 918, I get a dropped connection after after about 1 or two tracks, then all is well as long as I keep playing, any length of time not paying from the Synology and the process repeats dropping after one or two tracks

2. Set to 180 and it drops the connection frequently

3. Set to 1500 and it drops the connection more frequently

Anyone had this issue and resolved it?

Thanks in anticipation.

I have the DS213+ and have no issues whatsoever with drop out.  It'll play all day and not miss a second but I haven't changed anything from default.

I also use Minimserver  but I'll give Mediaserver a try this morning and report back.

A friend of mine got himself into a mess with his 213 that he also uses with audio & TV

I helped fix it & it turned out to be one of three changes that we did not find out which one was the cause as we changed 3 items & then rebooted the 213 Streamer & TV at the same time.

He had changed the Synology “default” firewall setting

Go to Control Panel – Info – Service & make sure “Allow thru Firewall” column boxes are all checked,  in other words allow all.

We changed the LAN switch from a dirt cheap old thing to a Cisco of some sorts,  not so expensive thats all I know.

He had the streamer DHCP (memory) set to No,  we reset to Yes

One or more might help,  but whatever you do I recommend a reboot afterwards to make whatever change you do make become effective.

45 minutes into my session and no drop outs.  I'll have a swatch at my settings on the UQ2 and see what's what.

In relation to Mike-B's post above and my Synology NAS...

My firewall settings match his, all are checked although there's a '-' by Java SE Embedded, Antivirus Essential and Bliss.  The rest all have a green tick.

I don't use a switch as of yet, just goes via a Sky hub.  No issues there.

DHCP on the UQ2 is set to Yes.

Are you sure this isn't due to the way your switch is handling multicast? You don't mention how your home network is configured, but if for any reason multicast is not working properly the SSDP messages may not be getting propagated.

Just a thought as I have no experience with Synology.

Hi everyone

Thanks for all the thoughts... I have to confess I'm stumbling about to find the cause so having found something that does have an effect perhaps latched on to this rather than other potential issues.

Yes, found the need for a reboot myself!

We are using our Virgin Media Super Hub with cabling patched through that and I have read much about this device now and switching to modem only then getting a new Router to connect the rest of my network to.

Any other guidance still gratefully received.

Sounds like a good plan - I have seen issues reported here and elsewhere where the Superhub does not behave properly. Once you have a decent switch or router at the heart of your network you should have a better experience.

+1 on the good plan. I think Dave is on the money on handling of multicast - and we know some low end routers struggle here. Even putting a switch infront of the router should help, as most consumer switches treat multicast frames as broadcast frames and send them out on all ports - which is fine on a small home network. Bigger commercial set ups would use IGMP and Snooping here.

Thanks Simon. I have a switch I can try and will do a bit of a test using my Apple Times Capsule doing the duties in place of the Superhub this weekend

If that sorts it I'll invest in a new Router.

Steep learning curve... spent ages deciding on the product solution but now seem to have uncovered a whole new level!

Appreciate the post.

Network streaming and computer audio is not that difficult and can be extremely rewarding. The issue is often the home network providers who chase a few extra £/$ margin by providing sub-standard network devices as part of the package. Naim may be the Aston Martin or Bentley of the audio world, but you can't expect top performance driving them over a roughly ploughed field!
