Unitiqute and nap100

Posted by: Stefan N on 26 April 2014

Hi!

Have had my nap100 now for three weeks and I wonder why I have to raise the volume quit a lot more then I did just using the unitiqute. I have set the spekers to none on the qute. It just seems to be less powerful then the qute alone.

I've got one on my uq2 and it is undoubtedly louder

The gain should be the same, so should not be louder or quieter, quoted at 29dB. They are the same so you can biamp. NAP500 has a slightly higher gain. Stefan something is not right, start by checking your interconnects carefully..

Stefan, in my experience, the best thing you could do is sell the 100! The Qute is best left alone, a quite superb little device, and a great reason not to venture further up the never ending Naim upgrade path.

Totally agree with your comments . I had a Nap100 connected to the Qute for a time but was never really happy with it. Since I have returned to the stand alone Qute I am very happy indeed. A truly great piece of kit on its own

I love my 100 on my qute2, more of everything,  but agree ghe qute is a superb piece of kit

Hmm...A while ago my ex wife bought herself a unityqute but it sounds Hollow and no pratt at all. She considers a nap 100 to make iT sound beter with more control and pratt. But Reading this maybe this is not  a good idea.

Agreed. I had a NAP100 on the end of a Qute2, sold it. Moved house and now have a much larger listening room (as opposed to a bedroom setup) so I'd gladly have another given the chance.

When I change the speker setting to small or large nothing happens. It's like the qutes poweramp is still on and running through the nap100. The qute gets hot but the nap100 seems to remain rather "cold". Could this be a setting in the qute I don't know about? Could a reset of the factory settings help me?

Large or Small will make no diff. as you are not listening to the Qute's power section. The speakers are connected to the NAP and what leads are you using to connect Qute to NAP?

Sorry Stefan, my memory fails me, you should hear a difference. The manual recommends you switch off the speaker outputs on the Qute.  What is the quiescent temp. of your Qute from the front panel readout?

The temp this morning was 40.
It seems to me like the poweramp of the cute is active. Would it help to reset all settings?

I wouldn't be too worried about a quiescent temp. of 40C. You could try a factory reset but you may have to re-key in your wireless network key if you are running wirelessly. I remember seeing my Qute sat at 40C doing nothing, SU is at 39C doing nothing so far. My Qute is in a non centrally heated part of the building (and there's no heating on anyway)

You can test whether the power section of the Qute is still active by plugging in one of the speakers whilst it's set to none, instead of the speaker connection output of the NAP.

I will try that when I come home.
Thanks

Now I have tested the qute and it turns the power amp of when I switch to "none" in the settings so that doesn't seem to be a problem. I have also reset the factory settings but I still have to raise the volume a bit more then the qute alone. I have connected the cute wih a pair of audioquest G-snake rca-rca but I have ordered a pair of naim cables rca-din 4pin. Don't know if that's gonna make any difference. It just feels like i'm missing something?

Hi Stefan, I believe the interconnects you are using are fine, the addition of RCA to DIN will have a slight benefit though. I'm wondering if your expectations might be leading you astray slightly, as the gain of the power stages are the same (but due to tolerances can be noticeably different, a common problem for speaker manufacturers) any difference should come down to handling of subtle signals during louder passages and the overall grip of the amp on the speaker. The improvement I heard was marginal, and with my current 'bare' Qute2 into PMC DB1i I have to have the volume at 45+ to feel the music so to speak..

Try and forget about the numbers and give yourself a week listening on the NAP, make a note of the music you played, then repeat the weeks listening on the Qute. Forget about the volume for this period, just dial in what pleases you. If you still feel the 100 is detrimental to SQ (forget the numbers!) then sell it

Good advice. I will follow your recomendations. Thank you for your advice with common sense. I really appreciate your time.
