Naim Downloads folder
Posted by: TN on 26 April 2014
I use a Synology NAS with the Serve and have created the Naim Downloads folder on it, following Naim's guide.
My question is this: Is this folder only to be used for downloads from Naim. I currently only have one download - Naim's Meet Me in London - which is in that folder. If I purchase downloads from other sources, can I store them in this folder and be read by the Serve? Or do I have to store them in the network share?
Hi TN,
I pretty sure you put all downloads from any source in that folder.
Jason.
Thanks.
Inside the folder are HQ, LQ and MQ. Does it matter where the downloads are stored? Presumably HQ is for hi-def downloads?
Whoa there, TN. You are mixing up two concepts here.
First, I assume that you have the uServe SSD version - not the one with the internal hard disk drive?
Assuming this is the case . . .
Your uServe will have created a Store on the nas, where it stores files it has created itself. This store has the LQ, MQ and HQ folders in it. You should not try to add anything to the Store yourself, or to those LQ, MQ and HQ folders. Those are for the uServe's use only, with the files you have ripped with it.
You may also create a Share for music you download from other sources, or rip on a computer yourself, etc. Music places in the Share will be seen by the uServe and available to be served by it. This share is created using the DTC for Windows, or n-Serve for OSX. Any shared folder that is on your nas can be converted to a Share. You can name it anything you'd like (it does not have to be called Downloads), so long as you use only upper and lowercase letters, or numerals, and no spaces or other special characters in it.
You can create any folder structure inside of a Share that you like. The uServe will scan it and remember where the files are. But if you move files after they've been scanned, the uServe will no longer see them (until a rescan).
I hope that this helps,
Bart
*edit* The uServe puts files it rips into the MQ folder in its Store. The LQ folder is where it will put MP3 versions of those files, if you tell the uServe to creat them. The HQ folder is not used at this time, I believe. Again, do not 'mess' with those folders; they are for use by the uServe only.
Thanks Bart.
I have the 1TB Serve but because 1TB is insufficient, I do not have any music stored on the Serve HD. Instead, I set it to rip directly to the NaimRips folder on my NAS. All my CD rips are stored in the MQ folder in the "NamRips" folder. And that folder is my music store.
When I set up the "NaimDownloads" folder on the NAS, it also created 3 sub-folders like in the NaimRips folder - HQ, LQ, MQ. I'm just wondering if I can store downloads that I purchase, say from Linn, in this NaimDownloads folder and will they be read by the Serve or does the NaimDownloads folder work the same way as the NaimRips folder and will only read Naim rips/downloads.
Thanks Bart.

If you got those 3 sub-folders, you set up "NaimDownloads" to be a Store, not a Share. That won't work properly for storing downloads that you purchase. Rather, that will work exactly like your NaimRips Share. Go ahead and delete it (you don't need another Store), and convert a new empty shared folder on your nas to a Share.
That will get you in the right spot. You need a Share, not a Store.
I just checked the settings and the NaimDownloads is not set up as a store but as a share. Only the NaimRips is set up as a store.
So being a share, I guess I can store all the downloads there and the Serve should be able to read them.
Yes. But there shouldn't be HQ, MQ and LQ folders in a Share. I think that the only way they could have gotten there is if at some point you told the DTC or n-Serve to create a Store. But if it's a Share, all should be well.
It's a funny old world. You can store in a share, but you can't store in a store. As you Americans would say; go figure....
Well, you can tune a piano but you cannot tune a fish.
There must be some Olde English equivalent.
