New Router Advice/Recommendation
Posted by: Professor Fink on 27 April 2014
Hi All
OK, to sort my constantly dropped network connection with my wired Synology DS214Play to UnitiQute2 - going to add in a new router and switch my Virgin Superhub to modem only.
Have to confess to limited knowledge of routers, have narrowed it to these two, anyone had any experience of them or know they work well... or not!
1. Draytek 2130n
2. Asus RTN65U
We are Mac based, wired iMac with Time Capsule, iPhones and iPads wirelessly
As ever any help greatly appreciated.

I am very satisfied with an AVM Fritzbox. Extremely reliable and a wide range of products to suit your individual needs.

I have a DrayTek (the older 2710n) and it has been rock solid and totally faultless. It was recommended to me by a friend who knows about this stuff, and he was right.

Asus is a perennial favourite brand among people who know. If you can swing the extra thirty bucks, the N66U has much better wifi than the N65U, apparently. I went with the N66 and it is very capable and flexible, easily operating in different modes as you work your way through turning your existing setup into a modem only. Firmware is easy to upgrade, web interface is easy to use, online help is easy to find.
Best wishes for success.

Thanks for this... seems even either would not be a bad choice then! Will look up the N66U, the Draytek is £113 anyway so £110ish for the N66U is no issue if you think its a better product.
Any other experiences welcome and thank you.

Forgot to say... particularly interested if you are running them with the Superhub!

Take a look at the Billion range of routers. My 7800n has not skipped a beat in 3 years. Highly recommended....at least by me they are!

Asus all the way, I have used three iterations of theirs including the one you are looking at. Rock solid and some of the fastest throughput in their competition range.
Also on virgin, superdud on modem only

I use Asus and like others here absolutely rock solid since day one. I tried Billion once because of the recommendations and also Draytek but both had issues.

Great thanks everyone! Looks like the Asus N66U is a good way forward.
Two weeks in and getting there slowly!
