unitilite & connection problems

Posted by: Annanas44 on 30 April 2014

Hello all,

First time on the forum.

I am a new owner of a unitilite and very happy about it.

Except for iradio: I have recurring disconnection problems as soon as I listen to some stations. Not all of them: web radios such as Classic and Jazz, Jazz Radio or Cinemix seem to work fine.

But it is not the same as soon as I try to listen to Radio France stations. I sometimes have a few "hick ups" at the beginning and then it is ok. But the disconnection can at other moments make listening impossible.

I have a wireless connection between the unitilite and the iMac. I don't think it comes from the network since things work fine for Upnp: I have no problems to listen to music stored on the iMac. I also tested my network with Apple WiFi Diagnostic and Network Strength and both find the network to be good.

The Unitilite, the iMac and the Livebox are in the same room: the Livebox is wired to the iMac and the Unitilite is about 2 meters away from them.

Thank you for your help

The UnitiLite really likes a wired connection. Mine also kept dropping the iRadio connection, until I hard wired it.

... and welcome to the forum!

Hi,

Try fixing the IP address on the lite, and make sure the DNS settings are set to what your ISP uses, not the router's IP address. Some routers tend to not assign the ISP DNS address and instead supply their own IP address instead.

Hello,

Thank you for the answer and for the welcoming word.

When you say "hard wired", do you mean using an ethernet cable ? If so, is the connection good if the cable is 3 or 4 meters long ? (the Utilitilite is not right next to the iMac)

Hello,

Thank you for this new lead, although I don't know the difference between my IP address and that of the router. By "router", do you mean the DNS ?

Anyway, I'll have a look at the settings on the Uniti: the address I entered for the wifi connection was the code on the Livebox. But maybe it's not what I should have done ?

Your router will have an address in the format xxx.xxx.x.254. The individual IP addresses of each of the devices on your network will have similar addresses probably in the range of xxx.xxx.x.01 to 100 for the final sector.

You can communicate with your router's web/config page by typing its ip address into your web browser.

192.168.1.254 seems to be a popular router address.

Ok, so your 'Local Area Network', or 'LAN', is controlled by a router, which will have it's own IP address, typically 192.168.xxx.xxx. This is quite variable depending on the router manufacturer. It will distribute IP addresses based on it's IP address, so if your router's IP address is 192.168.1.1, then each device that it finds connected to it will be given and IP address following, i.e. 192.168.1.2, 1.3, etc.

A DNS address as far as I understand it is like your router IP address only for your ISP instead, and is part of a 'Wide Area Network', or 'WAN'. So when your router connects to your ISP it's like your router is now a computer on the WAN, so it will be assigned a 'Gateway Address' just like your computers getting their own LAN IP address from your router.

Now in order to fix an IP address on your Uniti we need to know the following addresses. Subnet Mask, Gateway IP, and DNS. You can gain all of this information from your router, so if you can find the IP address of your router simply enter that into your web browser on your PC and it should take you to a router admin page. You will need to know your router's Username and Password, if the router was provided by an ISP they should be able to tell you this with a simple phonecall.

Once logged you should be able to find the information you require as above. One other point I would like to make is in regards to 'DHCP', which is the part of the router which assigns IP addresses to your networked devices. I would set this to start at a higher point, allowing you to set an IP address on your Uniti before the DHCP stuff kicks in. As an example, set that to start from something like 192.168.x.100, and set your Uniti to 192.168.x.2. This means that the router will not try to assign 192.168.x.2 to any other devices, therefore avoiding any IP conflicts.

There should be atleast 2 DNS addresses, write both of these down for use with the Uniti.

Configuring the Uniti is easy, simply enter the setup (little spanner symbol on the remote) and then go down to 'Network Settings'. From here you switch DHCP to 'No' and then come down to IP Address, and input the IP address following directly after the one belonging to your router. Under 'Mask' input the Subnet Mask, under 'Gateway' input your router's IP address as this is often variably assigned by your ISP unless you specify that you require a Static IP address. The input the 2 DNS addresses that you have previously written down.

From here you should be good to go, hopefully you don't find this too wordy!

Hi,

Yes, an ethernet cable from your UnitiLite to your router (or switch), and it can be as long as you like it.

Hi,

It's done: the Unitilite is connected to the livebox with an ethernet cable. No hick ups for now    Hope it lasts.

Thanks to you all.

Hi,

One last check : Did you switch the UnitiLite off and on again after connecting the ethernet cable ? This will ensure that the unit sees the wired connection.

(To check that this is the case, use the remote control to access the setup menu : press the "spanner" key to the left of the "i" and scroll down to "Network settings". The UnitiLite display will indicate if the wired or wireless network is in use.)

Yes, I did. But hadn't checked the result. It's done now and it says "wired". Thank you.
