I've been there and know how you feel. We had the Christmas from hell in 1986. First week of December we were burgled and the following week found out the Burroughs plant where I'd worked for ten years was being closed the following March.

The police who handled our case asked us first of all if we were adequately insured and we reckoned we were so they then told us there was little chance of anything being recovered. Sadly my wife lost some family jewellery such as her grannie's engagement ring and other stuff like that, and things I'd given her early in our relationship. All gone, never to be seen again and probably sold for a pittance. Luckily they didn't touch the Naim or Linn gear.

Apart from the personal stuff everything was replaced and even upgraded in many cases but it didn't stop the feeling of being violated. They'd rummaged through my wife's underwear drawer and dumped the contents on the floor for goodness sake. We never felt comfortable in the house again and I slept with my Stanley claw hammer by my bedside until we moved to California the following April, as the police told us we were likely to be done again because they'd seen what we had, knew it'd be replaced, and appeared to have been disturbed.

If ever I met any of those beasts I'd have no hesitation in burying my hammer in their heads. There's no justification for it at all.

But it all depends on the house insurance you have. As long as you're covered for a reasonable sum with new for old you're OK. Sadly it doesn't cover your old precious stuff.

Wow. How do the insurance companies deal with those odds?

In particular, do NOT put the empty boxes from the new equipment out with your trash. If you do, you are just telling the thieves that you have replaced the equipment they stole. Since they already know how to get in and where you keep your equipment, the second robbery will be easier for them. Happened to two folks I know.

Hi Dark Whisper, I have just seen this post.

It must be everybody's one on here's worst nightmare. I know it makes my blood run cold at the thought of such a invasion of my home. I wish you good luck with your both your dealings with the police and your insurance company.

Best Regards Graham.

Sorry to hear the news and feel for you with the pain of trying to sort this out.

I once read a story in our local newspaper about a chap who had tools stollen from his van. He put a wanted advert in the paper and the person who stole his stuff responded. He got his tools back and alerted the police.

It's moments like this when I switch from being social liberal to right wing reactionary but this kind of thing is a real kick in the teeth when you have no doubt worked so hard to.  Every sympathy to you and your family.

Is it really? What's the evidence for that?

It's the first thing they do as they figure most victims wouldn't imagine the crooks will back again, and they're just waiting for all the items to be replaced so they get 2nd helpings.

I have another incredible story: I have been cheated by an official Naim dealer in Croatia (Audio Sustavi). The story line is that I have part exchanged my Naim gear as well as provided cash for funding further purchases in total amount of 13 000 euros. I have never received the equipment in three years time. After numerous visits to the dealer I got the info that Naim has distribution problems because of overload. After sending several emails to Naim, the delaer was removed from the official dealer list on Naim web site.

Local tax authorities are dealing now with the fraudulent ex Naim dealer, but time is passing with no results.

In the mean time, I have rebuilt my system, but it took me a lot time. Funny thing is that I have been mostly furious because somebody stole the music from me. Money came second.

This just shows that you have to be very carefull and even check the dealer's creditworthiness.
