NAIM UNITI 2 : network issues (wired connection)

Posted by: Flipmode77 on 04 May 2014

Hi everybody,

This morning I had a problem with my NAIM UNITI 2 using the UPNP source (tracks on my NAS) : each time I tried to load and play a track stored on my NAS, I had the following message : "ongoing connection; please wait". And it never started to read the track...

I have finaly noticed that the track was playing during this message but at a very very low volume (!?!).

I tried also to play web radios but I have received the same message on the display panel and I had the same consequence (tracks played at a very low volume by putting my ear on the speaker).

I uninstalled the n-stream app then reinstalled it but it did not solve the problem.

I rebooted my internet box but it did not work.

I unplugged then replugged my NAIM UNITI 2 ethernet cable. Same again...

Have you ever met the same problem ?

I do not understand because it always worked before !

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have on a couple of occasions had something similar. the age-old trick of tuning the Uniti off and in again did the trick.

The official term for this is 'it's gone funny'. The official cure is to turn the Uniti off and then on again, and it will work.

Ok so it's just a "bug" ?

I thought my network card or my DAC was falling down...

No. You cannot ascertain the nature of the problem in that manner. It could be interference (conducted susceptibility) or something else...

occasionally my SuperUniti just sits there displaying "connecting", once it displayed the "update completed" message! i have discovered this happens when I reheat my tea with the microwave in the kitchen, but it does not always happen. A VDR across the line\neutral in the microwave plug has sorted the problem (mostly).

A similar connection glitch that I sometimes get happens when I update the DSM software on my Synology NAS. It doesn't always keep all the settings from the previous update, particularly in the Media Server package.

So, if you have a similar setup, it might pay you to check the DMA compatibility settings in Media Server on your NAS - you need to tick to allow devices to access the media library for both n-Stream and the Uniti itself.

i for one don't get why purchase a NAS when you can be better off with a DAS so that neither of these issues occur.

What's a DAS?

Direct Attached Storage e.g. external hard drive via e.g. USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt etc.

An advantage of a NAS is that all devices on the network can be made to read/write data stored on it. That's not to say it doesn't have any downside!

PS like the USB one in the pics above. Getting slow in my old age!

But how would that work on a Uniti?

I use a NAS & n-Stream myself - perhaps Sharik could outline the benefits of the DAS approach?

Wait for a couple of years and you will have those little USB thingamies that you plug in with 1Tb of RAM.

Trouble is, I've got about 1.6 Tb of FLAC's on my NAS already!

Wait four years then!
