Watches

Posted by: CP62 on 08 May 2014

Hallo,

On this great forum there are people who like high end audio and good wine. Are there any who like watches  and are collectors. Brands like Oris, Rolex , Omega and others?

The original report was published at Nasa's website some time ago but there are countless references on the net. There are now a few other watches which are approved by NASA for space missions, but I believe the Speedmaster is still the only watch to be certified by NASA for space walks/extra-vehicular activity. Not bad for a watch designed in the fifties!

I stand corrected. I couldn't find any of my original references but it's years since I read them and I've no idea whether it was even on the web . Anyway the Speedmaster was a worthy winner even though a more up to date Rolex appears to be much more robust. I'm glad I have one of each.

Thanks.

Me too. Mine's about the same age. I wear mine 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Never had a service, never missed a beat.

Mine has a green face, and the logo isn't coloured, but otherwise the same as this...

Seiko SKX007 (about £100) in front of Burg Eltz.

And in front of the town hall in Oslo.

I have one like this on my wrist when I'm wearing a suit (which however is quite rare occasion nowadays).

Yep. Kari Voutilainen makes beautiful and expensive stuff.

Here's mine, a 2001 mechanical beauty that's understated and masculine like the IWC but at about a gazillionth of the price:

Go figure, mine is a Kirium too, although mine has a grey face and the stainless steel is entirely etched/non-polished.

When I bought mine the coloured logo denoted a battery mech while the steel only logo was for the auto-winding mech (although IIRC correctly that did change towards the end of their life cycle).  Mine is battery powered with the coloured logo though.  I am so happy with mine I recently bought an Aquaracer for my better half.

Here's my Ebel 1911 chronograph which I bought in 1996. It has a Zenith 134 movement, which costs a lot to service every 5 years. I wonder if it's worth it, sometimes. I should have bought a Rolex Submariner.

My daily beater...

A crappy photo but here is my old Omega Seamaster that I wear to the office each day.  Originally my late father's who bought it new in the Sixties. He gave it me when I passed my A levels.  Naturally the strap has been replaced a few times and while winding it up each day is a bit retro it has proved utterly reliable. I haven't seen another with the same grey face.

My father just bought a 1947 Omega which looks just like that from memory. I'll take a snap when I get the chance and post my findings.

I'd be interested to see that, Graeme

I don't get on with wrist watches, though on high days and holidays I do bring out this!

An 1880 Benson "Ludgate" Silver watch with gilt brass movement, with an English style [the best] escapement with proper chatons holding the jewels ...

A handsome and very easily read watch from the outside being a good two and half inches across and three ounces in weight, but from the inside as crisp and lovely as it was 134 years ago:

And it keeps time. A minute a month is easily regulated for.

It does not tick-tock, but rather tock-tock-tock ... Steadily like a Junghans Alarm clock!

Such a shame that Benson was wiped out in WW I by a Zepelin raid on Ludgate Hill.

In those days the Englsih handmade watch was the best in the World.

The glass is the original flat and very strong bevel edged fitment, which though slightly scratched is far nicer than any possible modern replacement! The case is not pristine, but inside it is amazing ...

ATB from George

PS Fresh photos from today.

To be fair, I've looked through all the watches and I'm sure you'll all agree mine's the best looking one. Although, Mick hasn't posted a pic of his Submariner.
