How are you connecting Qobuz to your Naim?

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 10 May 2014

I have been very impressed with the lossless FLAC streaming on the Qobuz HiFi service. On my non Naim systems it sounds great. However connecting to my Naim has not been quite as good an an experience, other than perhaps when connecting my iPad running the Qobuz app into the Apple USB input on the Naim DAC, and this isn't really practical.

I have used AirPlay into AppleTV into the Naim DAC or NDX but that sounds less good than the direct iPad connection.

So what to do?

I was wondering whether a Sonos Connect feeding SPDIF into the DAC might be better?

Hence  interested in people's experiences here  if there are any?

I do my streaming from a dedicated AudioPC via Sonicweld Diverter HR2 USB/SPDIF into my Naim DAC.

On the AudioPC I just run Qobuz Desktop.

Cheers

How about getting a super long Apple USB lead to connect to your nDAC?

Qobuz on Sonos via SPDIF into DAC works very well with both wired and wireless connections. The venerable ZP80 carries about 15-20 seconds ahead in the buffer at any time in case of interest. Not sure how that and other aspects of operation compare with the AppleTV you use. I have not tried either Airplay or AppleTV so couldn't say whether Sonos was better than that.

Like Marky I use a Sonos ZP80 (the original connect) via Coax SPDIF into my NDX.  I use QED Signature Coax cable.  NDX is standalone (no nDAC or PS).

This is noticeably better than the Apple TV but does fall just short of the NDX streaming UPNP. You certainly don't need to apologise for the sound though, it is very good.  I was hoping the Apple TV would be as good as this would have freed up a Sonos zone for other duties.

I have had a play with Sound card capture using Asset from my PC.  It sounded pretty good but I haven't done a serious comparison.  It was rather clunky to use via remote desktop though.

Qobuz on Bluesound Node via optical into DAC. It sounds better than Airplay and you can also play highres files from a NAS, something you can't with Sonos.

If you're saving for a NDX, use a blue sound node in the meantime!

Squeezebox Touch via optical into NDS. Really enjoy it.

i haven't done it but I feel another Raspberry Pi project coming on using XBMC and their Qobus plugin. Anyone tried it?

Via Sonos into my SuperUniti - sounds very good!

Im on a 1 month trial at the moment, and normally use Napster 320k stream via Sonos for checking out new music

Qobuz sounds better for sure but the library hasn't always extended to what I've been looking for.

Think I'm going to wait until we see what comes in September with the new app and whether this brings any native streaming with a firmware update before I decide my next step.

Thanks all for the replies and thought. The Sonos looks like a possibility. The Pi option looks potentially interesting, but I wonder if it would stream the output over the Ethernet?

That had occurred to me about the Pi solution and so I'm thinking of combining a Pi with HiFiBerry digital out board and plugging it in to the NDAC. The board is 32 euro, so it's still a cheap experiment. I need to find out whether Qobuz will stream to an IP address in Czech Republic first.

I thought I read Qobuz and Naim were very close to issue a common application. I shall wait and give it a try then.

Somewhat unrelated to the OP but to its title – my apologies Simon - I love Qobuz for the selection of WAV 24 bits that I can download and still have access to should I loose my files. I am not quite ready for streaming, even in 16/44, yet I must admit. I still see all this, wrongly I know, as a convenience at most. I am still behind I guess. I usually download those 2 or 3 albums, most of the time in so-ambiguously-called Studio Masters, that made it to the top in Diapason or even Gramophone of the month, plus the very few jazz reeditions that pass the Cook Penguin test - otherwise I stay on my CD edition or go HDtracks - and that’s it.

I think there must be some traction here.  If you go to the customer service page on the QoBuz website there is a section to enter your configuration. The Media Player drop down includes Naim (NDS, NDX, ND5 XS) as a selectable option.

Maybe the software update in September and MUSO will see this introduced.

Richard, I did ask this at the recent Soho Naim event.. But no public confirmation one way or other currently.

i am curious how it might potentially work integrated with Naim and the new NStream however.

For my fellow countrymen...

"..Paris based music streamer Qobuz says it will expand its lossless service to North America before the end of 2014. "Canada will be first," Edward Chisholm, the head of International Business Development for Qobuz tells Hypebot, "and the States will be streaming CD Quality music in time for Christmas."

Seems to be lining up nicely with Muso and the nStream replacement which, I have to assume, will feature native (or plug-in) Qobuz support.

Recently I bought the ND5XS (still waiting for it).

As the n-stream app only works on Apple, I asked the dealer what other options I had to stream music from NAS/Qobuz/Spotify.

I suggested maybe another app could do the job.

So we tried the Linn-app (kinsky) and it works. As well from the laptop as the smartphone. It also allows for volume control. However this was only for NAS. Not tried it yet with Qobuz/Spotify.

But on the site there is also 'Songcast' which should enable you to send any sound from your laptop directly to Linn (but I guess it might work for Naim too).

It's worth a shot. And I will try it too.

I've a Raspberry Pi with a HifiBerry Digi board running Squeezeplug / Squeezelite connected to the S/PDIF input on a Qute.  The Qobuz plugin is running on LMS on my Vortexbox.

Can browse and search on an iPad using iPeng 7.

Works well.

I am also trying to figure out to link Qobuz to my Qute2. I was wondering if a Bluetooth receiver would work. I saw them reviewed in What HIFI, and I was wondering if I had Qobuz on my tablet or phone could I think it to my Naim via this Blue Tooth receiver.

Any thoughts or am I barking up the wrong tree.

also which RCA input would I use on the Qute???

Would using Asset's stream capture facility work for you? Details here:

This is how I use Qobuz (Mini PC/Windows with Asset) and set the playback in Asset to WAV for WASAPI.  Then use nstream to select WASAPI.

There are a few seconds delay before the track starts or if you select another song, but I am enjoying it and also use spotify this way.  Can make up a playlist and just leave it playing through uPnP.

QB Sounds fab through my NDS

I am using a Sonos connect into the NDS via S/PDIF. Works a treat. The new software is out since today. It improves greatly the user interface including with Qobuz. The albums displays are larger.

hi Simon,

I stream Qobuz via the Nad M50 streamer ( Qobuz is fully integrated ) and connect to the Dac via coax.

Kind regards,

I streamed Qobuz via my Squeezebox Touch, using a 3rd. party plug-in, into DAC-V1 USB input which worked very well when I trialled it but I wasn't prepared to pay the £19:99/mth since Spotify has a better/bigger catalogue of music for half the price. Only 320kbps, compared to Qobuz FLAC I know, but more than good enough to preview music before committing to CD or hi-res download purchase.

I'm using the same setup running piCorePlayer on the Raspberry Pi. It's my main streamer now used for music stored on my NAS and works as well with Spotify and Qobuz via the LMS plugins. I have the Raspberry installed in a NAPSC since Naim doesn't want to give us a pure streamer i had no choice then to build one myself The Raspberry sounds pretty good, can't distinguish it from my previous Mac Mini running JRiver.
