Storage units for CDs
Posted by: DarkWhisper on 10 May 2014
At the moment I've my CDs on a shelf but I am starting to add a significant amount of CDs and am running out of room. So could anyone put a picture of what they use to keep the CDs in and where it was bought please.. Hopefully i can find something that's not massive but looks good..
With thanks Drew
Sorry my fault. Should of been more clear...
CD rack
For physical CD storage I was spread out all over the wall with 3 CD specific shelf units that were about to grow to 4. Not only were they taking up too much room but when I moved it necessitated a sheet rock repair & paint. Then I bought this unit:
It holds I believe about 1,400 CDs (they make various sizes), it rotates easily on nice bearings, it survived a (local) move wrapped in moving blankets, and was fairly easy to assemble. Best of all, my CDs no longer take up 10 feet of wall space.
If interested just google "spinning CD tower" or "rotating CD tower"; a number of online retailers carry them, and just compare prices and shipping for the size & colour you want. (IIRC my shipping was included in the price, which it weighs about 70 lbs or so.)
I mainly use my music server, but I have the CDs as a backup, and the CD5X sounds a little better than the streamer. (Plus I am ever mindful that the music server IS a computer, and one day will s**t the bed as all computers are wont to do, and I can still play tunes on that unhappy day!)
FWIW, I am happy with my choice.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by massive.
You can use as many of these as you like. I have 4. From IKEA.

Height: 202 cm

That was funny Winky.
But rest assured, you're our favorite dick - lol!

I was going to write, "just rip" then I saw Winky's, but I did not write it so I can't be a dick.

I can recommend the Benno, too. I have five in black, but there are a choice of colours. Been very pleased with them.

Seriously, though. Little silver box is the solution to all our living-room CD-plastic clutter. Just brilliant. I could never go back to physical CDs. Music is 99% ripped CDs which are now archived in the basement.

A MAC Mini!
Solution to storing CDs for sure! Just use the iTunes that is loaded with a decent DAC and your fixed!

Before the Mini, we used a cabinet that had 20 CD drawers. Held about 600 Cds. It was a bit cheap and cheerful but looked OK. I liked how the CDs weren't actually on display. It's, now doing duty upstairs, out of the way, holding DVDs and BDs.
They were made in about 5 colours.
I used to buy Soundstyle CD racks from my local sevenoaks shop. Now no longer made but come up from time to time on flea bay. Very small footprint just over 12 inches square, but as they rotate hold up to 250 CDs. When available they fetch 25/50 quid, new appx £200.
Also do a search on Flea bay for Greenapple CD racks. Very classy.
