n-Stream issues when compatibility mode is disabled

Hi All,

I've seen a few posts on this subject, many of which are inconclusive and after several days of trying different things I believe I have the answer.

I recently bought a QNAP HS-210 and Naim SuperUniti. The QNAP and Naim connect to my Sky Broadband Router/Switch, and my iPhone and iPad are running over the wireless network with n-Stream.

I found that Compatibility mode would work consistently on n-Stream, but it's basic and I wanted the full features that you get with Compatibility mode disabled. When I disabled, however, it would work only intermittently, and slowly.

I thought that it was due to the UPnP Server, so tried Twonky and MimimServer, same issue with both.

I then saw a post saying that a similar issue was caused by the Broadband router/switch. So I thought back to my Network Engineering days, and looked at the configuration on my router.

My Wireless channel ID was default/auto. I remember that overlapping channel ID's cause Wireless performance issues. So set it to use channel 6 - Channels 1, 6, 11 are the best Wireless channels to avoid overlap.

After everything rediscovered the Wireless Network on channel 6 (this happens automatically) I can now use n-Stream without the Compatibility mode without issues.

No need to spend days trying new UPnP servers, or to replace your router, just change the wireless channel, as your neighbours are probably running default channel 1 also!

Hope this helps others, Carl

Good tip Carl.  If possible, you might want to update the title of the thread so that others know you offering help, and not asking for it!

Maybe something like "How to solve nStream issues..."?

ATB.

Re fixing a set wifi channel; I'm not sure exactly how this works, maybe others can come in .....

I've had issues with my broadband service, good speed for a wired service so much so that we are last in line for going optical in my area. Problem is the local community overloads the system at morning/evening busy times so I get frequent stalls & dropouts.  An IT / communications pub buddy said my router has an automatic channel preference selector that supposed to pick the less busy channels to give the best service, but he said it doesn't do such a great job & that I would be better to fix it on to a channel, he said he has his fixed on 11 & as he lives well away form my location I fixed mine on channel 11.  It for sure fixed my problems & I hardly notice a slow down even at the morning/evening busy times.  So it does seem like a good tip, maybe simple dumb fixed channel is better than "Smart"

As for nStream compatibility,  I can't comment as I haven't tried to change it from "off" - it ain't broke etc ..........
