Neil Young & Jack White on Fallon show

Posted by: joerand on 13 May 2014

Jack White recently restored a Voice-o-Graph sound booth made in 1947 that records directly to vinyl. He appeared on the Fallon Show with Neil Young who recorded Willie Nelson's song "Crazy" in the booth, live on the show. A vinyl record of Neil's performance was directly produced and played on a portable TT. The result sounded like an old 78 record, but it was cool to see. A purely unaltered recording.

Later this month, Neil Young will be releasing an entire album entitled A Letter Home that was recorded in the booth. Pre sale price for the box set on Amazon is $100. My thought is that vintage sound quality comes at a very steep price. Although, the box set contains one standard 12-inch record, one audiophile 12-inch record, seven 6-inch records, one CD, and one DVD.

Shame I won't be able to see that in the UK - huge fan of both of those guys.

What puzzles me is why there is a standard as well as an audiophile 12" record? What does the standard disc offer - surely even people with basic systems who aren't bothered about sound quality won't mind an "audiophile" disc?

Here is a link if anyone is interested: click on the first video and carry on watching it once it's finished as it is a three part video. There is a countdown to the next clip.

I  was not too over excited about it but then again....

Tony,

Thanks for providing the link. It's obviously a gimmicky promotion of Neil's new album, but I like the concept. I like the notion of the relatively young Jack White's interest in restoring a vintage recording booth. I don't think I'll spend $100 on the NY package. Some here might. ewemon perhaps?

On the other hand, I might spend that to have the very six-inch vinyl that dropped out of the machine. Imagine that concept; Neil could provide a menu of songs that could be ordered. You choose a song and pay your money, Neil plays it in the booth, and you get the actual vinyl from the machine. He could even personalize it - "This one's for Joerand" - and then he sings me a two minute version of "Sugar Mountain". A true one of a kind. I wonder what price Neil could command for that product?

Heard the album and it won't be on my shopping list

Just watched again, this time, the "live" broadcast on NBC Europe. Why does it look  like jack has just joined the  Amish community'?  It does  sound terrible!!!! Jack is a talented young man and I'm not really sure he is in the right path here with old "dreamer"!
