Finding radio paradise in N-Stream

Posted by: Jota on 13 May 2014

Hi.

emailed Naim support about Naim's choice in N-Stream being down and asking where I could find Radio Paradise.  They said it could be found under the USA but doing a search turns up nothing.

So, where can I get my hands on the 320kbps stream?

Thanks in advance.

I also was heavily influenced in my selection of Naim by the ability to stream hi quality radio say 256kbs and above in the various codecs available AAC, mp3, and now some such as Qobuz in high quality FLAC. I believe that this is a better solution than DAB which (to my understanding) is currently limited in bandwidth to around 125kbs. As many people on this forum state; a good source is key.

My streaming from my NAS is rock solid, never (well very very rarely) a hiccup so why isn't the iRadio as reliable. I understand about the ability of a site to be able to satify many customers but to me that is not the problem here, it seems to be something much more fundamental. An update to the post put out by Naim on 13th is, IMHO now overdue.

As an aside is anybody having issues playing the Qobuz stream or is that treated more like my NAS rather than iRadio in the Naim world

Naim's choice is working with RP on my us/nServe but not on the nds/nStream on the same network.

I have been unable to access Naim's Choice on my Qute for about a week!

Posted on: 19 May 2014 by DWO-Naim

Am I the only one that is still not able to connect. I see that the "sticky" relating to Naim Choice issue is still up so I am assuming that:

a. It is still a problem

b. Naim are still working on a solution.

Hopefully it will not be too long for a fix but the issue has been known for over a week now. An update from Naim support would be good. Show that they care about keeping customers/users informed about issues they may have.

The optimist in me thinks that they are reworking the whole Naim Choice capability so that when they introduce the Muso this kind of issue doesn't occur.

I am also having problems... No Naim choice. .BBC R 4.. I can find but it will not "connect" so I can't replace it in my presets! ...no problems with Planet Rock etc...is this just a BBC problem ?

It's a little strange on reading these threads on issues about not recieving radio stations. I have never had this issue on my ND5 here in Oslo. So I am wondering if this tends to be regional based?

Jason.

There may be an element of region in this.
I am UK based so if everyone having problems is in UK then that may be something worth looking into. With regard to the radio stations via Naim Choice I see no region factor there as I am having problems connecting to stations from all over. I can connect to some from UK eg Classic FM (need to check to see if that is via Naim Choice - it may just be a preset) but not others eg BBC R3 hiDef. Note I can connect to Avro Klassiek (NL) but not Radio Paradise (USA).

It may be related to equipment type (am I grasping at straws) - I am using UnitiLite. I have no problems streaming anything from my NAS.

You might be right about regions,  its all working OK for my mid south UK area. I tried it again last evening for first time since last week & found what I wanted was now working OK - (R3 R4 RP Naim) Its the same again this morning everything in Naim Choice seems to be working.

But after this last week of breakdown & unacceptably slow fix, whatever the excuse, I'm HAPPY I did not part with the NAT05

So..turned the unity off and on...hey - presto ..all back to normal!

Posted on: 20 May 2014 by Steve w

Including Naim choice!...hope everyone else gets the same result.

Posted on: 20 May 2014 by ChrisH

It's just 'back' Steve w.

I just tried it on my SU on the off chance just now (no re booting required) and Radio Paradise 320 connected no problem.I've really missed RP this last week or so!

Posted on: 20 May 2014 by Jota

RP working here too. (Scotland)

Posted on: 20 May 2014 by DWO-Naim

Just asked wife to check at home and RP is working for me as well. Hurrah!!

No switch off-on required, although I must confess I tried that during the week and it didn't make any difference.

Okay.. A couple of observations.

Naim choice seems active. Yay.. But Naim 320 kb now sounds nearly half as good as before. Very much like RP 320 which has been always matter of fact sort of. I mean SQ, not great playlist of RP for sure. Gone is clarity, texture and all that oomph that made the difference. What's the deal? Is this a test phase?

Additional pod, Naim testpod, forever Floyd channels. I know it's exciting but none can play..

Naim choice stations are good in connection. Mostly stable in buffer levels. But "other channels" suffer a lot.

Also,   I cannot find or play some of my usual suspect stations in the US, Greece, Norway, Switzerland. Yet decrepit Rai and 64 kb Avro Classic remain in the menu. C'mon guys, pay the vtuner man already!

Linn stations sound superb as ever but infested with buffer issues.

Hello Salisbury, this is HK calling.. What? We are not allowed in Eurovision?

Here in the southeastern US, I finally got most of the stations back today.  Ironically, Naim Radio constantly flutters and drops out.  I'm also experiencing long connection delays between stations.  This is very frustrating!

This whole Naim Radio over the internet thing is staggering. Get a MAC, set up iTunes, and feed your DAC with that for internet radio, It just works. It gets the best streams available in the territory concerned. In UK [at least] it is completely reliable on Radio Three at 320 ... Never tried Paradise Radio, as it has no interest for me, but no doubt ...

Painless and reliable. Great quality on live concerts, and not less than competent when broadcasting commercial recordings.

Just two pence' worth from George

I agree that there are lots of great workarounds and I'm actually using one right now.  But, if I have to rely upon my Mac to ensure that the Qute has a reliable connection, it negates the system's primary purpose.  BTW, I had no problems prior to a week or so ago, so I wish they would explain what's going on and what they are doing to address the situation.

Posted on: 20 May 2014 by DWO-Naim

Many thanks to George for the workaround. I do however have to agree with the thrust of npoguy's reply. I spent a lot (for me) of cash on a solution that I was led to believe worked. I even had to go out and invest in an apple product to get nStream so that I could gain better control of my system. I won't go on about there being other operating systems rather than IOS. To me I was buying into the Naim brand that sells itself on the very high standard of its products. I therefore cannot see why those products do not work "out of the box". There seems to be a need to buy into a whole world of workarounds. I just hope that Naim produce a fix that works and allows the equipment to work out the box, as described with no need to use any other products. Rant over - I'm off to listen to RP or the likes while I can.

A (temporary) fault in the service is human and forgivable; total silence from Naim on the matter is not.

Very bad PR.

Off with their goolies!

I have just now retuned BBC 3 & 4 from the so-called Naim's Hidef list of 18 channels. I thought they sounded iffy, so I pressed "i" and chose Stream Info. BBC 3 is 56k and BBC 4 is the same. Hidef my a**!

AVRO is 256k & Radio Paradise is 320k, and the sure sound it.

The BBC 56k stream is available on many lists. Very poor form by Naim to pass them off as Hidef.

I presume Stream Info for these channels is the same 56k for the rest of you.

iTunes radio over broadband offers the various levels of definition available and also offers the bit-rate being translated in the "get-information" menu. There are three Radio Fours and two Radio Three streams in the UK. It has has never failed yet in over a year of use. Like other things, MAC, it simply works, but if all it did was work that would not quite be the whole story. The quality is excellent as a bonus.

I have to say that I have no idea why anyone would use anything else, given the obviously dubious nature of what is reported here.

Or you can stream directly from the BBC Radio Station web-page concerned. The quality is not different from the iTunes access.

I remember reading somewhere earlier that BBC HiDef stations are restricted only to UK region (I might be wrong though but they certainly are not 256/320k here either), so not necessary anything to do with Naim.
Posted on: 24 May 2014 by George J

Dear Osprey,

You are correct that the BBC does intend [or least has intended this in the past] that the resolution is controlled for region. The intention is that Radio Three - for example - is available in the UK as a hi-res stream and also a lower resolution.

The Hi-res stream is supposed to be available only in the UK and only the lower resolution is available internationally, though it has been reported here - and I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this - that the hi-res stream has reached continental Europe at least.

I'm listening to Radio 3's 320k stream at this very moment, and very good it is too. So Naim have not messed anything up.
