Finding radio paradise in N-Stream

Posted by: Jota on 13 May 2014

Hi.

emailed Naim support about Naim's choice in N-Stream being down and asking where I could find Radio Paradise.  They said it could be found under the USA but doing a search turns up nothing.

So, where can I get my hands on the 320kbps stream?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Nigel,

You are in the UK, so this should be working correctly. But if you were overseas, then you would not expect the lower res stream to be presented as the hit res variant by Naim would you?

I think this is what is being said here, unless I have the wrong end of the stick.

I'd probably just think, o well, that's how it is, I don't live in the uk, and not mither on about it on a Forum.

George,

Thanks for the prompt clarification.

It appears then that the goalposts have been moved.

Before the recent hiatus of about three weeks ago now, when we had total silence on Naim's Choice for a period, I can say for a fact that I was listening to BBC 3/4 in hi-def. (I'm based in Dublin) So, something has definitely changed in the meantime.

I take your point about listening via other devices such as a Mac. But, for me it's a case of domestic layout. I'm currently sitting in a back room of my house, looking out onto my garden, and listening to my Uniti via two floor-standing ATC speakers. TBH, the last thing I want in the room is a computer - I've got three upstairs in my office. Nor do I want to be streaming from one that I would have to attend to later.

I just wish the BBC would see the value in putting their best foot forward for all of us listeners, so to speak.

Dear Dinarius,

Have you not seen a MAC Mini? As wide as a Hicap, but half as tall, and square. It is quieter than a Hicap as well - you would be stuck to tell that there is a fan in there somewhere! You should consider it. Completely unobtrusive unlike most computers.

I would never go to a proprietary solution from a Hifi maker for hard disc music replay and internet radio now, after the MAC, which self-upgrades, "gratis," and works beautifully.

On the BBC, their commitment is to spend what is effectively a Tax on TV users in the UK to provide a UK based service, except the BBC World Service TV and Radio programmes. That they provide anything at all for the international listen and viewer may be regarded as a bonus. In the current situation, where the BBC is under pressure to reduce costs, I would think the greater risk is that the streams of the domestic [UK] services internationally will be further reduced in quality and even stopped rather than increased. Britain is no longer a World power, and not respect as such any more. I think there is a realisation that Britain's role in the World is far diminished compared to forty years ago. The expenditure on the BBC will be allocated accordingly in the future.

Even the BBC World Service is a pale shadow of its former self these days, and the external services used to be financed from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The remaining vestige of the BBC World Service is now [or shortly will be] financed from the Television Licence Fee on UK TV viewers. How long that is viable I do not know, but possibly not for all that long. The BBC Charter is renewed every so often, and it will be adjusted and renewed again later this decade. I am sure that someone like Kevin W will know the definite facts on that. But after renewal, it is anyone's guess how much of the domestic output of the BBC will remain available internationally.

Whilst what George says is true I agree with the thrust of Dinarius' comment. Having spent a fairly large sum of money on a high quality system that indicates that it is capable of playing internet radio I, for one, think that it should be able to do that and do it reliably without having to use other items in the middle to achieve the aim. Bentley owners wouldn't be too happy if they had to tow a trailer with a third party generator in it to provide power for the inbuilt air conditioning because the Bentley included generator didn't work as described.

Any way I'm pleased that the "Radio" part is working just now - long may it last. I do hope that Naim sort internet radio streaming out before the Muso appears (ie use of a MAC is not compulsory to obtain reliability) otherwise they may just get quite a few returns.

Apologies if I have gone on a bit.

Thank you George for providing more detailed information. I seemed to be at least partly on the right track (my own experience comes from Finland).
