Unitiqute cannot play from Asset once Mac wakes up

Posted by: CraigB on 13 May 2014

Morning all,

I have an Asset problem right now and SHMBO is going to bring down my Naim career if it's not fixed, so hoping you can help.

Unitiqute in the kitchen is streaming from Mac running Asset. I'm not sure if it's after the Mac goes into sleep or hibernation mode, or if it's after some other event, but when the Mac is woken back up, say the next day, I go back to the Qute and browse for music.

All is well with being able to pick up Asset, browse the music listings and select any particular track. Display then says initialising or something similar for a fraction of a second, then the display reverts back to the Asset server, which I presume is the root of the file structure.

The only cure then seems to be power cycling the Unitiqute, which is the baffling part for me. Nothing else works - I've tried stopping Asset, rescanning Asset, restarting the Mac, which all lead to the same result, and which points unfortunately to the Naim as the issue.

Has anyone experienced this, and might be able to help?

I had a similar problem with my UnitiLite/ ND5 + iMac.  I was able to make the problem go away by running an OSX vm via Parallels.  I now run the the server on that vm.  Since this change, I have never had an issue. [Note, however, I  switched from asset to JRiver but the problem was with asset, minim and JRiver]

Thanks Kevin - Although it sounds quite draconian having to run a VM to stop the problem.

My Asset is the trial unlicensed version but surely that cannot be anything to do with the problem either.

CraigB,

I've just started the Asset trial, and I have Playback and elyric on my iMac / Mavericks as well. I too have problems when the mac wakes after being asleep, but I find that Asset is actually more likely to be found than the other two UPnP servers. My iMac is brand new, and uses the Haswell processor; this processor is very energy efficient, and part of that efficiency comes from the processor 'slowing' or reducing operations to save energy and produce less heat. I find that Playback stops and will not automatically restart as it did previously on the Snow Leopard iMac.

What OS are you running? What wireless / wired connections do you have?

Power cycle the UQ is often the only cure for me as well. And this happens with the UQ whether it is wired or wireless to my router.

Hi Damon,
And sorry for my late reply. I think I've found the problem which locks up the UQ2.

I had to get SWMBO to show me her key presses over and over in slow motion and we finally replicated it, and can repeat the lockup for demonstration now.

So she's playing a track, decides she wants to play another and presses the down button. Realises she's arrived on the radio source so presses the PC button immediately before the radio's booted up.

PC goes through its bootup cycle and completes but that's when it fails. It will not play the selected track.

So I went in to the tools menu and disabled the down button, so hopefully the route into the failure mode is taken away - we'll see if there are any further bugs in this rather poor control software.

I also have the Mac on non-sleep mode so will try it on sleep shutdown/reawaken tomorrow.

Regards,
Craig.

Craig,

Is your UQ on the latest firmware? I ask because I just upgraded my UQ1 to 3.22, and it seems to have improved my various connection issues tremendously. That said, the UQ is now wired with ethernet to the router, as that is required for the firmware upgrade. Curiously, I could hardly get the Qute to actually connect to the router with a wired connection before; wireless was always better.

The aspect of changing the source, before the currently/ recently selected source is fully functioning, causing problems does sound familiar.

I had many problems getting the UQ and any UPnP software to connect and I also had problems getting nStream on my iPhone to find the UQ. The remote seems to be more reliable, and sometimes using it would kick the iPhone/ nStream connection into life.

Assest doesn't seem to have a setting that affects 'stay connected when computer sleeps' behaviour, but Playback and Elyric sometimes shut down when our mac sleeps.

Let us know how things work in the next few days.

BTW, I totally get the 'no more Naim if you can't get this one to work' ultimatum. Yep, I've had that position put forward quite clearly.
