Synology Transcoding: truncates to 16 bit?

Posted by: Dambor on 14 May 2014

I have finally managed to stream wav from my Synology DS213+ with DSM 5.0 to my ND5XS using its multimedia server. But when I stream 24/96 material, nStream shows 3072 kbps, meaning its 16/96, not 24/96 (!). When I use Jriver 19 as a media server from my iMac, same material streamed from the same NAS appears as 4608 kbps on nStream, as one would expect of 24/96. Am I missing something or this is something inherent to the NAS and/or its server software?

Uncheck the option below transcoding (downsamling for better compatibility or something like that, I do not have the English version of DSM).

Volker, the option was unchecked and still I get that issue. I'm really puzzled...

Dambor, I've had time to look at the situation today and I have the same problem as you. 5.0 DSM  isn't transcoding properly, it's only giving me 3072 kb/s.

Using Minimserver on my Synology DS213+, transcoding 24/96 files N-Stream shows WAV 4608KB/S.

The same album, streamed via Mediaserver transcodes as WAV 3072kb/s in N-Stream.

I'll be sticking with Minimserver then.

Yes, it seems it is truncated to 16bit.

Since I am unable to hear any differences between 16bit and 24bit (and between FLAC/WAVE), I am going to disable transcoding.

Oh, sorry...

I thought transcoding was fixed in DSM 5.0 (the older version had other problems...). So +1 for Minimserver

I contacted with Synology's customer support and after some back and forth emails their answer was (translating from spanish): "Once audio transcoding option is activated, the maximum bit speed (sic) of audio files is 16 bits at maximum". So it does truncates to 16bits.

I also found that I had gaps in gapless tracks using the Mediaserver in transcode mode.

Started using Minimserver and that gives me gapless and proper 24bit transcoding from Flac
