Transcoding

I have spent some time recently searching the forum regarding media servers. I have frequently come across posts about transcoding flac to wav on the fly. What is the merit in this, why not just rip to wav in the first place.

Wave takes up more space and unless you are using Naim's unitiserve, you will not be able to have metadata embedded into WAVE files.

Indeed WAV do take up more space compared to WAV. WAV metadata can be quite extensive but there are some variants that are not fully standardised and so not all software can read it. But outside of Apple this is occurring less and less in my expierience.

Naim does not store it's WAV metadata in the file itself, it is stored in a separate database.
