Streaming from iTunes library on a mac

Posted by: sjw98 on 16 May 2014

Hi all,

Do I need to set up a upnp server on my mac, if I want to stream to my uniti? Or has the mac advanced enough that this stuff is built in now. Sorry - new to this and still a little confused.

If I do need to set up a upnp server... anyone got any good recomendations...?

Hi sjw98,

Yes, you need to install a uPnP server.

Asset have a Mac version available on 30 day trial. Search 'Asset for mac'.

Anyone know if Twonky media server works with Naim streaming?  It's what I used previously to pull files from MacBook Pro to PS3, etc.  Also, Im contemplating between a UQ2 and a DAC-V1 and NAP100...is there any way to get Pandora, MOG, Internet radio out of MBPs USB?  This souls turn your MBP into the streamer and I could use what I assume would be the better DAC of the V1.

Please do a search here on the forums re Twonky   I think that you'll find all that you need to know -- it is the single most criticized server discussed.  I have not used it but based on the many reports here, it's the last resort.

Steve,

The Mac is plenty advanced. The UPnP system, on the other hand, is still in its teenage years; sometimes wonderful and sometimes ready to be shown the door.

I have Playback and eLyric. Both work well, though Playback has been better for me. I  still prefer and use an older version, 1.8.12.3.0. Playback is no longer supported or available as far as I know. Perhaps another member could pass it on to you. I'm about to try the 30 day trial of Asset as it is well regarded here, I think.

The set up is actually not that difficult. Install the UPnP software on your mac, and your streamer should find it fairly easily.

But search as well; there is already a good deal of advice and instruction posted.

Batch convert to flac - build / buy intel based simple PC as server - install Vortexbox - transfer flac (drag and drop from Mac on network) - administer Vortexbox server via web - setup alac mirror (vb will mirror flac to alac - if you still want iTunes - install Supersync ( one click install) - job done.

To make my MacBookPro UPnP visible and perfectly working, I simply use the SqueezeServer: it's free, well done, unobtrusive, auto installs perfectly.

Highly recommended.

My entire iTunes library is available to play through my HDX. I didn't have to do much to make that happen, just move my iTunes library to the "Public" folder on my Mac.
Would the same not apply to a Unity?

Thanks all. This is really useful. I'll give some of these a try. I'm currently trying tvmobili but the uniti seems to lose connection with it every so often which is weird. Also it doesn't seem to support streaming playlists... but that seems to be a common problem.
