Football Season 2014 - 2015

Posted by: Steve J on 18 May 2014

As requested here is the new season's thread.

Obviously the first picture has to be of the best team in the land winning 'last year's' Premier League title for the second time in 3 years.

At least the title stayed in Manchester Chris.

I know that this would normally entail a 'home visit' from Saints' equivalent of the 657 crew, but I'd like to see Pompey up here in the Prem too. (Although perhaps, as St Augustine of Hippo might have said, 'but not yet').

Chris

That's generous of you, Chris. Well, the first bit anyway

Seriously, Pompey are a huge club and I've never wanted to see them do anything other than well.

The rivalry's a problem though, and I fear always will be. A year ago I learned Liverpool and Everton fans sit together for their derbies, at either ground. Family loyalties are divided and the games are a festival of the city revelling in its football. Obviously It couldn't happen here but I wish I was wrong.

We love Cresswell at the Boleyn. Brilliant player.

To be honest, Chris, I think Pompey's natural place in the order of English leagues is in what is now called the Championship i.e. the second tier. While we have good and very passionate crowds, it was external money (or more accurately, borrowings) that sustained us for several years in the PL.  The underlying revenue generation of the club isn't big enough to expect year-on-year PL football, even with a bigger ground.  Flirting with the PL now and again would be nice of course, though that's a million miles away at the moment.

I agree with you about the PFC v Saints rivalry. It's probably too deep-rooted to ever completely disappear, though I'm pleased the worst excesses e.g. the violence, seems to have passed quite a few years ago.  And it's curious that when either club suffers a very serious ebb, the rivalry seems soften too. I remember some years ago when the Saints slipped to the third tier and had some serious financial problems, before the Swiss money arrived, there were quite a few PFC fans quietly worried about the possible demise of their most 'hated' rival.  Perhaps a symbiotic relationship after all?

Congratulations to The Blades for this afternoon's victory over a strong QPR side. Gracious of 'Arry to say they deserved it, too. No doubt QPR want to concentrate on Premier League survival, as the usual saying goes.

Should have added that Wednesday acquitted themselves well at Man City, too. Losing to the champions by an injury-time goal must be tough.

What an effort by AFC Wimbledon! They really gave Liverpool a scare there!

On another note, I wish the BBC pundits would extract their heads from Gerrard's arse.

Well done to Palace for coming back from a goal down to beat Spurs this evening.  A deserved win and a good start for Pardew.  But how the hell did this Spurs team beat Chelsea so recently?

+1. Always nice to see Spuds put back in their place.

On another note, we again sat back after going a goal up (playing 5-4-1, FFS!) and again paid the price with a draw.

Hippo Head really is reverting to type....

Look on the bright side, Kevin.  A point at Swansea is a decent result. They're a good side.

I'd have settled for a point at Old Trafford.....but it appears we've got all three.

Saw most of the game on Sky and I thought Saints deserved it. Man U didn't really have a decent chance and their midfield couldn't unlock Saints solid defence.  Didn't understand Van G's decision to take RVP off.  He's always likely to score no matter how quiet a game he seems to be having.  Anyway, justice was served over the two games because Man U stole the 3 points at St Mary's earlier in the season.

Great result for Saints today. But you see though if it's not all about Man U in the nationals tomorrow!

But there'll be 2 or 3 thousand very happy Saints fans to keep him company.

Come on you Saints.

Dave

PS Another point and they should be safe from the big drop.

Wow! Went to that incredible FA Cup 3rd round replay at the Boleyn last night - what a game! It had everything - and possibly the most thrilling penalty shootout I've ever seen. I'm still hoarse.

nah...we like it.  light relief from the Prem and it gives the youngsters a run out.....

Cheers Wat!

Three wins on the road in a week for Saints. Dare we speak softly of European football!?

Steven Davis was immense yesterday. Graziano Pellè also good in the way he drew in defenders leaving space for others. But a team performance.

Yes, Saints looked well worth their win at Newcastle.  Euro footie next season looking very realistic now.

Chelsea looking pretty awesome though.

Just watched on Sky the Gunners go two up at Man City.  They look worth their lead. City look a bit hesitant at the back. Augero and Kompany look rusty, understandable given the games they have missed. Mourinho must be smiling at the moment.
