NDX and Windows Media Player 12, "play to", "device not responding"
Posted by: Econjp on 19 May 2014
My NDX "sees" Windows Media Player on my desktop as an UPnP and is able to play files from its library (limited as its functionality is). Also the computer sees the NDX as one of the media devices and when I am in WMP, it gives me, under "play to" an option of playing to the NDX. But it does not... It is trying to connect and then tell me that the device is not responding or something like that... All sharing and firewall setting seem to be fine... Could be something trivial but what? Any ideas?
Kind regards
If your files are in FLAC I believe that WMP won't play them. However I believe there is a codec pack you can install to get around this issue.

What I've learned from this forum and others is that Naim network players are designed to "pull" the files from your media server, not for the files to be "pushed" from the media server. What I've read is that you can "push" for some time, but you'll be finally experiencing playback problems/errors that can only be solved by a full reset of the network player. Maybe this is what's happening to you.
Hi sjbabbey and Dambor, thanks a lot...
No, I know that WMP does do any useful formats and was trying it with good old (and, precisely, useless) mp3...
The distinction between pull and push is precisely what this is all about... Perhaps Naim should develop (or adjust) a piece of software that would allow one playing stuff from a PC instead of struggling with the apps? (Un)fortunately, nothing is happening to me - spotted the option but never made it play anything... Strange...
I did fire up WMP last night and it found my NDX without any problems. But because al of my music is in flac it wouldn't stream.
I have tried using MediaMonkey to push to the NDX and although it does work it often simply stops playing. It also has the same behaviour on my Arcam system.
I have also (and often use) Synology Audio Station to push and this works perfectly so I think it is the round trip to the PC for control info that doesn't work perfectly rather than the push or pull argument.
Thanks, Bananahead... As I said, finding the NDX is not a problem, but if you had (of course, just like me, by accident) an mp3 it would be interesting to know the result... Do not know Synology, but have on my PC Asset Control and Kinsky and they work fine, but they are not exactly "pushing" music, do they? They are more like apps... Would be nice to have n-Stream for a PC too, wouldn't it?
All the best
I'll see if I can find an MP3 later
And yes, the biggest faiure by Naim is that they don't provide Nstream for all platforms.
Thanks a lot... Will be looking forward to hear about the results of your experiments... And what Naim should do is also either to provide their own UPnP (tailored for their hardware) or to talk to people who do supply them. They say that NDX will work with all UPnP which may well be true but will it work well enough? Twonky has been making minced meat from the high quality files purchased from eClassical... Otherwise we one gets a great piece of hardware and a lot of frustrating experiences... Engenineering is not everything, is it? ;-)
The Windows Media Player 11 and up "Play To" uses proprietary UPnP service descriptions largely oriented towards compatibility with the Xbox family of products.
I found an MP3 and did a "play to" my NDX. And it worked perfectly.
Thanks and congratulations, Bananahead... I wonder what is the difference in our settings - sharing? firewall? God only (and Bill) knows... ;-)
