US SSD not reading disk problem solved!

Posted by: Audioneophyte on 21 May 2014

To all,

there have been several posts regarding Unitiy serve's being unable to read some CD's for unknown reasons.

So I can a test:

6 Previously un readable CD's (which I own)

then scrounged up the same CD's just different original versions.

So same CD just a different one which could be also bought at store/online etc.

On 5 out of 6 disks the alternate version worked successfully.

So I believe it has something to do with the specific CD pressing and not the US.

So if your disk is not being recognized then acquire a different version of it and give it a go.

Yes, that's pretty much the way it goes.

Its nice to see such a cool, cool head

Jason.

Just to be clear, the alternate CDs need to have a different matrices and/or SIDs?

Hafler, Im not sure what those are.  Would you please elaborate? and I can find out.

What I mean is the information printed on the hub of the CD itself. In the silvered centre should be a string of numbers and or letters (matrix) sometimes with a logo and the manufacturer. Also on discs manufactured since '94 will (should) be SID codes (ifpi.org has the info on them) mastering code in the silver layer and mould code in the clear plastic layer. I just wanted to find out if an otherwise identical disc would rip or if you definitely need to find one of a different vintage! Discogs is the best source for finding which matrices and SIDS are associated with different pressings.

My copy of Kate Bush's Aerial would not rip, but a copy borrowed from a Forum member was fine. My copy of Nick Cave's Dig, Lazarus, Dig would not rip, so I bought another copy for £2 and that wouldn't work either, despite being a newer cd. Maybe they had the same code; something I wasn't aware of. Whatever the reason, it's a pain. I'm still looking for a few albums.

I know Forum rules would preclude it, but it would be great to have a thread for people to ask to borrow copies that were known to rip from other members.

I now have a UnitiServe WAV rip of Dig, Lazarus, which was sent to me on a memory stick, but cannot get it into the MQ folder as it's not a writable folder. Good old Phil is going to come to my rescue though, and I'll be able to listen to this great album again.

HH, instead of the stick you need the album copied onto a CDr then it can be copied to the right place in the UnitiServe?

Phil is going to dial in and make it work, using magical powers.

ok, hope it works out. The only Cd I've come across that wouldn't rip was a Dido album, guess I dodged one

All sorted. It took over an hour to do, what with transferring the files and then doing a rescan. All clever stuff.
