How to connect netgear gs105 to router?
Posted by: Claus-Thoegersen on 23 May 2014
This is a little off topic. Recently I ran out of ei ethernet ports on my router, so I have purchased a Netgear gs105 switch. really nice build quality much better than my nas. When I return back from the Danish beer festival and have recovered I will put my ns01, squeezebox receiver and nas on the switch. The question is should a I use a specific port to connect the switch to the router?
The manual is very brief on this, but maybe it is explained on the picture of the unit, but not any use when you cannot see the picture or the symbols on the unit.

You can use any of the sockets, at least that's how it is with my little Cisco.
Danske Ølentusiaster !!!! happy memories (& some hard to focus mornings after) Have en god tid.
The GS105 ports are all 1gHz, Four ports have connected metal shrouds to facilitate screened Cat6 or Cat7. The 5th port is also 1gHz but does not have the screen connection.
If you have un-screened Cat5 or Cat6 cable is doesn't really matter how its connected.
I have mine connected directly between HDX & NAS via the linked ports with Cat7, & a single branch off to the router exiting from the un-screened port.
When you get back from the booze fest, remember to have both NAS & NS01 switched on before the first power up of the GS105, (its written in the manual but easily overlooked) Its an un-managed switch but it still needs to be formally introduced to its working partners.

+1.
As said above, just connect an Ethernet patch lead from any of your router LAN ports to your switch. The devices will negotiate automatically, it's just plug and play for you.
BTW Mike the GS105 uses GigE ports using upto 1Gbps port speeds. They don't operate at 1 GHz
I'm obliged Simon
My GS105 LED's indicate just as I expected - 1000Mbps link's to both HH3 (GigE port) & to the Synology NAS. But only 100Mps to NDX. I've always assumed they are, or, are able to operate up to that. I also understand the NDX is running around 30Mbps
A question for you, Netgear & what I can see most of the other makes with GigE switches show "Network speed 10Gbps",
? What is that claiming if the upper port limit is 1Gbps ?
Hi Mike, Ethernet operates at port speeds of multiples of 10; that is 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 10 Gbps etc. Ethernet devices will be designed to operate their ports at maximum specific port speeds. The physical layer configurations vary between certain speeds such as between 100Mbps and 1Gbps.
Most Ethernet interfaces using twisted copper (BASE T) can negotiate down port speeds as appropriate when the link is first established (physically connected).
If a device says it can support 10Gbps on its port, it means simply that, but it should also operate at lower speeds if required, but in divisions of 10.

Its worth pointing out that with overhead and other network stuff and indeed harddrives and the protocols used to transfer the data, in a home environment you will be lucky to see throughput of 100MB/s on a gig network.
I recently installed an poweredge 2950 server with 14 gigs of ram and 4 drives set in raid 5 and 2 in raid 1 (Sas)
This is plenty fast for home networks and throughput has topped out at around 120MB/s which is handy for transfers of data but of little value for say streaming.
Low spec NAS drives of say 200 quid will be lucky to hit 20MB/s on a gig network. And will function perfectly well.

I am back and maybe the beers made the setup easy. Fantastic simple find a patch lead to connect the switch to the router and insert the cables. Nice to know that the switch should be turned off when a new device is connected. I did not find the manual on the net wich is strange, that was the reason for asking here.
And an observation I have never seen and on off switch placed on the power lead instead of on the box itself.
