Usb stick 32 gb on nd5xs
Posted by: fred40 on 23 May 2014
Hi all,
Is it treu that if I want to use the usb connection in front of my Nd5xs I only can use a usb stick with a maxium capicity off 32 GB? Because you only can format the stick with fat 32.
I think that's fairly unlikely. Windows PCs with their hard drives formatted in FAT 32 are usually way over 32Gb.
Ok...but I"m talking about an Usb stick and not an computer hard drive.
I'm using a 64GB usb stick with no problems.
Ok...thanks a lot for the answers. Going to try it tommorow. All these different drivers, servers, rippers, nas, xld, bitperfect is driving me insane. just a simple usb drive will do the trick I thinK no hassel with lots of software and configurations.
The 32 in FAT32 refers to to size of the pointers in the File Allocation Table (hence FAT). Max volume size is 2TB; max individual file size is 4GB....neither of which is an issue or a limitation for audio on a USB memory key.

Windows tools will only format up to 32 GB in Fat 32, you need to download a 3rd party formatting utility which will format greater than 32GB. I have a 1.5TB disk formatted in Fat 32. I high capacity USB stick, should be treated just like a hard disk..
Just look for Fat32 formatter in google. There are lots of free ones...
Thanks

I have a 256GB that works.
Yep me too, I have a 128GB stick that works fine in my ND5 XS..........
I also use a 128GB stick, PC formatted, which works fine with HDX and NDS.
Apologies for only now realizing that this reply may have been too brief to be helpful.
Although the default file system on (relatively) recent Windows versions is NTFS (which is also "encouraged" for large volumes by limiting the obvious choices in the GUI when going above 32GB as mentioned by fretfan), it is still possible to specify FAT32 as your file system when formatting drives from the native Windows command shell (the old DOS-style command line interpreter launched using "cmd" in your "Start" button).
You would just type
format x: /fs:fat32
where x: is the drive letter of your external USB memory key. You can type "format /?" or "help format" to see an explanation for the command, a list of all the (optional) arguments, and maybe an example.
Good luck starting fresh with your memory stick if you're sure it needs to be reformatted. It's straightforward and little can go wrong if you're careful with the drive letter and you save any files already on there that you wish to keep, since the formatting will erase everything as part of the process.
