n-Vi outgunned

Posted by: Mike1380 on 25 May 2014

So....

As an n-Vi afficionado and a Home Theatre stalwart I've had some fun ideas for where to take the AV side of my system to since a recent house move.

I've only recently trodden the BluRay path with an older oppo (83) and have been thoroughly enjoying it, even though it down mixes into DD/DTS from the uncompressed soundtrack on my small collection of BluRays.

I've been using the n-Vi as a processor, and in fact still using it as the DVD player, not to mention the three channel amp for centre and rears.

For the weekend I arranged to borrow an Oppo 105D and some amplification to try out as an n-Vi replacement. My game plan was to try a couple of NAP100s, using a lone channel of one to drive the centre (can't bi-amp my centre) and the other one to drive the rears.

However, only one was available, so I borrowed a NAP 250 for a laugh...

Mistake!

Initially I put the 250 on the rears, so I could see how the single channel of the 100 would compare with the similarly rated Class T centre module in the n-Vi.   Frankly it was very very good. The Oppo matched well as a processor to the naim amps. I focused on some dialogue heavy scenes from Skyfall and found myself really enjoying it all.

Even with legacy DVDs it held up very well against the venerable one-boxer from Naim. I was very aware of the big monster driving the rears in some of the action scenes, but found myself thinking that a 105D with a pair of 100s (or a serviced NAP-V175 at the right price) would do very nicely....

Then the curiosity got the better of me.

As I'd borrowed all the leads to run whatever combo I wanted, I put the 100 on the rears and connected one channel of the 250 to my centre.

I put on the most challenging scene I know, the opening of the recent Karl Urban variation of "Dredd". During this scene, amongst the enormous array of guns and engines, there is a dispatcher communicating with Dredd by radio.

The n-Vi is the only processor I've heard that allows you to clearly hear all of the words in her dialogue.
The Oppo with the 100 on the centre allowed you to pick out intonation. With the 250 at the front, accents and breathing were clear.

MDS popped round to have a listen while I had these toys in place, and used the words "I thought it sounded amazing before, but...". So I'm clearly not going insane. Mad for trying it perhaps, but not insane.

I'd thought I could live with a pair of 100s. It is now very very clear to me that I cannot. I need a 250 (old will do) or a lone NAP135.

Anybody want to buy a kidney???

To anybody else thinking of this kind of tinkering.... you have been warned!

Oh, yes. Hearing this set up this morning was quite an experience.  Mike1380's standard HT system is the best I've heard but the Oppo 105D and 250/100, took the performance up to a significantly higher level.  Mike is absolutely right about the clarity and presence of dialogue from the centre channel.  The other impressions I was left with was first how big the sound was. The presentation seemed to go well beyond the boundaries of the walls and ceiling.  I've heard the expression 'it makes the walls disappear' before but not actually heard it for myself. Second, Mike's bass performance from his multi subs, each very carefully tuned and integrated, was impressive before but the intro on Prometheus showed the bottom end has got even deeper but still with superb control.  I don't know if that's the 105D or 250/100 but it's there.

As  n-Vi user myself, if it ever gives up the ghost I know what my next HT upgrade will be.

So are you able to use the 105 as replacement for say the AV2 in a 5.1 set up? For Blu-Ray my AV2 just passes on the uncompressed audio from the the Denon 3800 using the analogue connections. I use the AV2's internal decoding for the Virgin Tivo optical, so any 5.1 material gets done there.

Hi Rackkit,

I replaced my AV2 in my 5.1 setup about six weeks ago with the Oppo 105D. Very impressive. Never had better sound or pictures.

I used to have a Tivo. Excellent bit of kit, but I moved to a non-cable area.  Now have a BT Youview box. However, in this scenario they would both hook up the same way, which was hooked up through one of the Oppo105D's two HDMI inputs and comfortably fed 5.1 into the Oppo.

The Oppo was set to apply Neo:6 decoding to process any 2ch into surround, and also accepted DD5.1 on the appropriate broadcasts.

Given that it has only 2 HDMI sockets, some might find it limiting as a processor,  but that wasn't an issue for me.

Added bonus was running regular tv from the Youview through the Oppo105D's Darbee Video processor. Significant step up from the already excellent picture that my Youview delivers.

Frankly, am not looking forward to plumbing my n-Vi back in and giving the toys back... But at least I have a confirmation that my proposed roadmap will not just replace the n-Vi should it die, it will noticeably improve upon it

Thanks for the replies guys, it's good to know that if anything goes pear shaped with my AV2, there's a solution out there that means I won't have to junk my 145 & 200 amps I use for surround duties. Still happy with the way the AV2 neatly integrates with the rest of my system though...as you'd expect it to being an all Naim set up.

I have been using the 105D for about six weeks, replacing my Oppo 83 and AV2. It really is a step up in picture and sound quality. Watched Moulin Rouge a few nights ago, a genuine improvement, and with a DTS soundtrack.

How is the Oppo in terms of usability in a process style role? Is it clunky?

Posted on: 11 June 2014 by Mr Underhill

Hi Wazza,

I have to confess that I only use a small amount of its functionality. I use it as a pre-amp and processor for AV, but I do not make use of its DAC.

In AV mode I have a uniti input on my Bel Canto Pre3vb which covers front LR, I then use the volume control on the Oppo remote.

I use the physical remote OR I've loaded the Oppo Android remote software onto a virtual machine on my laptop, works well - and means I don't need to open the cupboard where I house the Oppo.

It works very well. I really loved the AV2, but the Oppo is better. I played Moulin Rouge a couple of nights ago, never better; and the sound steering is better too.

If Oppo release a Linux driver i will try using the USB input on the 105 DAC.

The 105D squarely beets my Oppo83>Naim AV2, which makes it spectacular VFM.

Oppo 105D - Picture Quality

One of the films I have used for review purposes over the years is Aliens. Mainly due to the poor resolution that renders black as green in many areas.

The DVD5 was a step up on my Pioneer, further improved by the Oppo 83. The 105D ups matters again. The greens are not totally banished, but they are almost gone.

The picture is frequently  grainy, but on the 105D this is not so distracting, and requires active looking, rather than just smacking you in the face.

Impressive processing.

I was going to suggest a 175/105 combo sounds ideal for you. 175 are pretty rare but do become available now & again if you look hard enough.

I've been running with my EAR534 for the fronts, NAP140 for the centre and 250 for my rear Kans. I've just updated my cables for the amps to Chord Cobra and decided to dig my spare 250 out of the loft to replace the 140 - which will mean resetting the balances ......should be fun.

Now where did I leave my SPL meter.

Hi does the 105D act as a preamp?

so only a Naim power amp is required?

Interested. Does the 105D have a DAC for taking the feed from cable tv digital out?

Posted on: 04 July 2014 by Mr Underhill

Hi Analogue,

The 105D has an inbuilt pre-amp section - so yes, only power amps required.

Yes, the 105D has DAC inputs, Coax, toslink and USB.

Depends what your TV is outputting through its digital output.
